I had an interesting thought. I was reading all the Shepard theories and I cam up with one on my own. What if Book is the informant who helped the group Simon payed to break out River. She is a weapon. I don't think anyone can argue that, but a weapon needs to be field tested. They also can't just let her go someone has to "watch" her.
I know I am crazy and this theory is reaching but I have a weird imagination.

PS I am new so please don't blast me too bad for my rediculous theories I just learned after Tara's death to not take anything Joss put on his shows for just one level, if you know what I mean.

Book's just being optimistic. The line is comic when it is promptly followed by A. "fixing the Bible", then B. the scary hair.

Intriguing theory, though. I've always thought Book was sincere about that religion and ethics stuff, but there's clearly so much more (and darker) than that.

I couldn't agree with you more. However, I think his emersion in religion is some sort of attonement. He did something bad while in high standing with the alliance. (thus the ID allowing him access to a hospital) He is now trying to make up for it by being a good man through God.
