I'm glad to see there are some fans of 24 here. I made two blog posts out of this, but I'm just going to restate it.
24 is the most addictive thing on tv. As a visual experience, this is probably the eqivalent of cocaine. Constantly moving forward, and very rarely taking a breather, puts you on the edge of the first minute and with each hour slowly notches it up until the very end where sometimes it literally explodes. "DAY 1: 11PM-12AM" is, IMHO, the most riveting hour of suspense ever made. Shootouts that outdo Peckinpah and Woo and suspense that would make Hitchcock proud. But it's more than just an action series. I read somewhere that 24 has taken the mantle of THE X-FILES in that it taps into societies fears and turns them into entertainment.
Also, in no way, shape or form does anyone match Keifer Sutherland in the BAMF (Bad Ass Mother Fucker) department. Mal Reynolds still has things to lose. Jack Bauer, on the other hand, has nothing. And when your protagonist has nothing left to lose, he is more dangerous than the bad guys.
I'm surprised some people on here don't like it. Has plenty of Whedon vets on it both in front of and behind the camera, so should be a fan fave by default.
As for the lack of humor on it, it's there, but it's understated. Each season has what I like to call a black humor moment. In Day 1, it was at 6PM with the Palmer's sitting down at the table for dinner. The tension is so thick that any interruption is funny. And in Day 2, when they're escorting Nina to the plane in the armored car, Nina looks over to the other guy and goes "How you doing, Mike?" As if they're in the break room getting coffee. And in Day's 3 and 4, Chloe's attitude is very acerbic. She's like a office temp version of Cordelia or Jayne. Also, in Day 3, in the deleted scenes, there's more of Dave Herman's character Dalton that shows that there would have been some funnier moments in the show.
Mind you, when you're on the edge of your seat and your heart feels like it's in a vice, sudden humor would seem inappropriate.

The only show that I've ever been as passionate about as much as I am about Firefly is Macross, and I was in middle school when I got to see this. Sure, they butchered it so they could air it in that Robotech series, but I completely fell for the storyline, the characters, the mech designs, the Zentradei...all of it! I've enjoyed other shows, but never got as interested in them, and figured there'd never be another Macross for me...until now. Thank God for Firefly!

And for the adult shows: "24", especially season two. Rough, relentless and partially cencored in German tv.
