Who thought Book was a Fed?

There's a scene in the pilot where Mal is interrogating Simon about his connection to the Alliance. Then Book walks in and bombshells, "Hate to say it, Captain, but you've got the wrong man."

Everyone lets that hang in the air for a moment, until Mal realizes that Book is referring to Dobson rather than himself.

And so, the question: did anyone watching for the first time fall for the fakeout, briefly thinking that Book might be the mole? 'Cause I'm thinking that if airing the pilot last didn't kill that moment for everyone, the opening credits might have anyway.

You know, none of the passengers were supposed to be in the cargo hold...We know why Simon, and why Dobson was there...What the hell was Book doing there though? Man, I wish they would have gotten to that one...

And, why do you think the credits killed that idea? Joss Whedon is well known for pulling capers with his opening credits...

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

Well, I saw them in original airing order, so I knew the truth.

But a friend of mine who borrowed my dvds (and I told her to skip the opening credits on the first ep) totally bought into it. She said she knew it wasn't the doctor, because he was too obvious, but she thought it was the shepherd. She'd forgotten about Dobson.

She thought Zoe was killed too. She knew in advance that Kaylee wasn't because we mentioned the actress being in the movie before she decided to watch the show.

She didn't know Simon, River, and Book would be staying on the ship though - thought they were just guest stars.

Trying to remember...but you know, for that split second I think maybe I did. Or if not a Fed, that he was the one with something to hide...

Which of course he may well still be!

I have to admit that I thought it, for that split second before the camera panned to Dobson. My thoughts ran something like this, "NO! Not Book! I like him! Oh, wait, it's the annoying guy instead. Whew!."

And speaking of Joss messing with credits-I remember the episode of Buffy when Jonathan was the "superhero" and the credits were like the Jonathan show. I hadn't seen it awhile and I was thinking "what the heck is going on? Did I miss something? I know I haven't seen Buffy in awhile, but what's up with Jonathan? This is weird!!" I was so confused for about the first 5 minutes before I realized that something not quite right was going on.

And then I learned never to trust anything Joss gives you at face value.

One of the rumors going around the fan nets presently is that perhaps Book was an Operative before he found religion.

It would also fit with his comment in the pilot that he "...never married."

(points above)

Me too. Saw them on TV out of order so I already knew that Book was not the mole.

i dont really remember, altho i do think book culd still be up to something, i find him teh singularly most intruiging member of the show.
Because u never know what he's gonna do or say, he's entirely unpredictable, because let's face it, we have no idea who he is, we can't even be sure he's a proper shepherd

With the opening credits, I meant more along the lines of:

In the commentary for Welcome To The Hellmouth, Joss said he wanted to put the actor that played Jesse in the opening credits just to mess with people, but cooler heads prevailed.

And, over on Angel :

Select to view spoiler:

Doyle was put in the first few episodes just to wrench some heart strings. I mean, a TV Guide interview I read let me know that he wasn't going to be around for very long, but seems like Joss got his wish by putting someone in the opening credit sequence, just to kill them off a few episodes later. Bastard!!!

And, of course, the Jonathon thing...I have to say that I was rolling on the floor laughing about that one...

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."
