The I in Firefly
Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:24:49

I’ve been trying really hard to come up with something original to say about Firefly and Serenity. But gosh darn it all, there just ain’t nothing to say what ain’t already been said. So for my first blog entry here at Fireflyfans, I’ll keep it brief and sweet – just like Kaylee – and the show itself. This is actually the start of my third blog (oh crap my life is disappearing in a haze of entries) and so it won’t be updated very often or with much to say because it is so specific to Firefly and Serenity. I first watched Firefly after I bought the DVD set. I know, big help with the ratings I was . . . But you see, I don’t have cable, or satellite or any other form of piped-in TV and for that I’m thankful. I hate commercials as much as Mal hates the Alliance. :finger: So I avoid them completely, and that saves me about fifty bucks a month – which gets converted into DVD sets. One, of course, was Firefly. I knew from the pilot episode there was something special about it. And I was already familiar with Buffy and Toy Story so I knew Joss could write an awesome show. I was not wrong and I watched all the episodes over a period of about three days. My favourite character is Kaylee. She is the jewel of the show, and Canadian like me, so how can I not just be drawn to her? She is to Firefly what Alyson Hannigan is to Buffy. The reason I didn’t just trade in the discs for something else. And I even got to meet Jewel in Toronto this year at TT20. What an absolute sweetie. She showed me the bruises she had on her arms from filming The Tribe. The things actors do to bring us on-screen joy! When I got her autograph, I asked her is she liked dark chocolate. She gave me such a look of (duh, I’m a girl – and what planet did you just come from anyhow?) but in her sweet Jewel way. And for those who have met her in person you know what a stunningly beautiful creature she truly is. My gawd, I was looking at her thinking – how can she be so utterly cute? I mean how is this possible? And it wasn’t just me. My friend had the same reaction. So, for those who have not had a chance to meet Jewel in person yet – make it a mission. You will be impressed with her cool sweetness and her knockout good looks. Anyhow . . . . . . I handed her the chocolate bar and she, of course, smiled and looked all grateful. I love it when we mere fans can do some small thing to give back some of the joy these wonderful actors give to us in their performances. I can’t help wondering though if she actually ate it or threw it away or gave it to somebody else. One of those things I guess I will never know. Unless Jewel posts here and tells me of its fate . . . . . . hey, is that a pig I see flying over the ice in hell? Well, that’s going to be it for blog number 1. If I have any more Firefly or Serenity (or Joss creation related) stuff to write about I’ll come here and do my thing.

Yes, this is just a repost from several months ago, but since I don't think there is a way to choose which 'Blog' you want to display on the first page, I'm re-posting this here. So I don't have to preface every comment I make with - its my opinion and not meant to offend - I'm posting this here for anyone, and everyone, to read. First off, if I want to offend you, you'll damn well know it. I won't use pretty words, disguised within florid prose. I'll be blunt about it. When someone posts their work on a public forum that allows for comments, that author/designer needs to understand that they aren't always going to get responses that they want to hear. I'm a pretty blunt person. If I'm going to take the time to read/comment on something, I'm going to give my opinion and it may not always be praise. If I see something I disagree with, (and its usually characterization or spelling/punctuation) I'm damn well going to mention it. You don't have to agree with me, (and really I do love to debate subjects but not until there is nothing of the original topic left but bad and hurt feelings on one or both sides) but conversely you don't have the right to tell me my opinion doesn't matter. I always attempt to make sure my comments are made it in a polite way. It's possible to fail in that due to the unemotional nature of reading simple text on a screen. What I truly detest is when I, or someone else, makes a comment and then is sent a private message being attacked and flamed for that comment. Ever think you took that comment wrong? No. Probably not. Ever think, 'oh, maybe I shouldn't be so quick to be pissy with that person, maybe they're right? They're looking at this from a pov that isn't so adoringly close to the story.' Some wonder why people leave anonymous reviews. Huh. Perhaps those who want to shove their opinion rudely down someone's throat and who cowardly flame in private and kiss ass in public ought to re-think what they're doing. The above paragraph is no longer relevant for firefly fans . net but they are for other forums where Anon comments are still accepted. I like reviews, whether they are good or bad. It doesn't matter so long as they are constructive. I want people to point out if they think something is out of character. I may not agree, or I might. Maybe the reader can point out something I missed or didn't think of.

Just wanted to let anyone who is interested know that if you were waiting for an update on one of my stories, it isn't gonna come. At least not here. If you're interested in reading my stories you can find me under the name meimei42 on both Livejournal and fanfiction.net. The cross posting is getting a little much and I get the least amount of response here so I am cutting it out. There aren't a whole lot of people who dig what I write on this board anyway. So take care. Ps. my livejournal is friendlocked but the stories are viewable to the public. Take care! Dani

This is from a guy on my email list, he has never heard of firefly before and its awesome isnt it. I love it. Friend of mine, how we have grown The times have passed, went and gone over the past few years leaving memories of joy and tears You take my hand and hold it tight you see me through the darkest night While others laugh and call me weak you stand up, and turn the other cheek You push me forward, driving on giving me a reason just to push on This day is a new day, new victories to win Think about the future, you say, not whats been You take the bad dream, and bad thoughts aside though my life seem just like a bad thrill ride and drown out my worries with love and peace you take my chaos, and bring sweet relief You take my mouth, and give me words to say and when in doubt, you save the day For when i am at a loss, and my words just wont quip You filll the silence by carresing my lips You take my lost heart and guard it tight You take my dark soul and add the light You take my nothing and bring everything anew I just wanted to say I love you Jarid Earnest

I can not believe programs like Firefly get cancelled and programs like Survivor and Big brother continue season after season. It's typical however. When a truly unique and brilliant series like Firefly comes along, it takes a couple of years for the fan base to catch up with it. It is a shame it never got a real chance at success. I have seen all the episodes and the movie, and all I can say is....MORE!!!
