Yes we're finally having winter, two months late. It was a relatively warm winter and now spring is overcompensating. Lovely. At least I don't have to go out until tomorrow.

I know firefly was inspired by the civil war in the US, but there is another civil war, that makes the whole Browncoats saga more personal to me. I'm Nigerian, and Nigeria had a civil war in the late sixties called the Biafran war. A coup had just happened, and the group that ruled began to dominate and in some cases exterminate other groups, most notably mine, the Igbos. So the Igbos created the state of Biafra and attempted to seceed. They faught for almost 3 years, outgunned, outmanned, but holding their own, until the Feds backed by world powers blockaded the region and starved them into submission (not to mention being betrayed by their allies within the country, specifically one duplicitous and ass kissing ethnic group). For months after they surrendered they still maintained the blockade and hundreds of thousands starved to death, they then began weeding out the Igbos all over the counrty and systematically exterminating them. Emboldened by the fact that the world said nothing. Had it happened just 10 years later, they would have been condemned for their crimes against humanity, but even now, as it's being done quietly, no one says anything. We multiply with a vengeance. They kill a dozen people, an Igbo woman will go give birth to 12 children. Our population is actually outpacing the slaughter. Now the young ones who didn't live through the first war are starting to talk about a new war. Even I'm willing to go back and take up arms. But it boils down to the same odds. We are out gunned, out classed, and out supported. All we have is our honor, and our handsome faces. Lately I have found a lot of people from my region who had never heard of firefly and gotten them into it, and they all took an automatic liking to it. I think I may have inadvertently stoked the fires of revolution by making some kids believe they can emulate the browncoats, but the again... can't they?

So I've been really loving writing posts for the Special Branch story. I've got a fixed storyline for the Needy character in that thread, well fixed in the essence of knowing his journey, but I've been willing to go on a few detours (And on occasion, it's allowed me to write bits that will tie into later events... totally by accident!) I also enjoyed the Destiny reboot a few months back, and now its re-reboot. But I still haven't finished my original Needy fanfic. The one which told the story of Needy before he got onboard the ship Destiny (which by the way is a different Needy to the one that exists in the Special Branch 'verse) Only, now the Destiny thread is totally wacky and out there, with robots running amok and Needy previosuly shrinking to one third his size, so it's relation to the Needy origin story is distant. So it seems that there are now three different Needy stories. 1. Prequel Needy - The character is more serious but offbeat, abd a total romantic. (Starring in "Needy's Destiny" in the blue sun room fics ) 2. Needy, First Boy Whore of Destiny - total goofball, with a tendency to act jealous and whiny. (Starring in the "Destiny" threads) 3. SereniTree/Special Branch Needy - Deadly serious. A former companion who fights the good fight. He died, was resurrected and now is apparently invincible. But he often talks to a ethereal being that only he can see, one who has convinced him that he is some "chosen one" (Currently starring in the "Special Branch" threads) All caught up now? Well hopefully that's cleared some stuff up. Now, the real reason for this blog: It's been 11 months since I last posted an entry in the "Needy's Destiny" fic. The original reason for the delay was due to errors with the site and me not being able to gain access for 6 months or soemthing ridiculous. Then when I got back, I spent most of my time trying to keep up with the Special Branch thread. I managed to get one new chapter done, but didn't want to post it until at least I made headway on the following ones (didn't want another 11 month gap) So now I've written two chapters, and the semi-concluding part (entitled "The Aftermath") should be written soon. That one shouldn't take too long as it's main purpose is to tie up loose ends and set up the next (or rather, main) story. I figured Needy's Destiny would be about 8-10 chapters in length. And I had the main idea in my head. But then I got sidetracked adding a subplot (a Wild Card attacking one of the companions) and that sort of became the main plot. So instead, what I've got now is almost a series, instead of a story, and this Wild Card one is merely the first episode. So Chapters 1-8 will be the pilot, and any other episodes will follow later. I'll try and get each following story completed though before I post any of the chapters. At least that way I won't have to write mega-long recaps to remind people what happened moments ago in the story. Which, is what I've got to do now. Eleven frakking months for heaven's sake!

This is just me knocking a few ideas about. A couple of folk wanted to know about my thought processes (at least, I assume that's what 'where the hell do you GET these ideas?' was about  ) so... 2. Imagery. Links to the names thing. Because of Ilargia's name origins, a lot of ideas relating to her, particularly in River's speech, are moon related. Other imagery, especially in 'Zen' - I did a lot of doll and bird imagery. The bird thing was partly River as 'little Albatross', but also a good link to the Ibsen play, 'Wild Ducks'. So the 'Doll's House' wasn't a mad stretch, either. And the whole birds/cages thing tied in with the soiled doves/sitting ducks line, too. Incidentally, it wasn't until after I wrote the idea of hawks (military) and doves (Companions) conflict that I discovered that 'Little Wing' (about the most perfect River song) was from the Neil Young album of the same name. And the doves flying up before Mal was basically John Woo. I had a wu xiu vibe about the Training House. Plus it gave me that little scene with Jayne - how there isn't much space for being pretty and useless in the 'Verse. Just to make you think about what the Companions or whoever really had in mind for River. The painted doll thing - River being painted up and kept safe until it was time to use her in someone's scheme. Tied in with the idea of a rather dull and pampered existence back in the Core, and a link to Ibsen's 'Doll's House', too. Her speech is so very good for playing with ideas. You can use metaphors or allegory, and unless someone is aware of the context, it does look like babbling. Unauthorised use of poetry and song-lyric creep in here, too. There's more animal imagery in 'Viva New Vegas'. Wannabe might be nuts, but most of his speech is Hunter S inspired, with a nod to Jubal Early (am I a lion?)

A man done on a DUI has claimed it wasn't him that crashed his truck into a lamp post, it was a UNICORN!!! :disappointed: Even when he sobered up he maintained it was the mythical horse-like beast what done it.
