I just read a blog entry I didn't like. Not new, I've read lots of thing I don't like, usually accidentally. But normally, I don't feel the need to comment on it. I think there is a lot of crap in fan fiction. More than in original fiction. You know the stuff folks get paid to write? We (fan fic writer's) don't get paid to write this stuff, nor would we expect to (unless you're completely off your nut). So, in the case of Firefly, Joss Whedon (or any of the other lovely writers of the show) is not standing over our shoulders going 'That's OOC. That would never happen.' And since it's fan fic, it's whatever the bloody hell we want it to be. I think everyone should label their fic thoroughly (Though I am guilty of gross negligence in that regard) so that one may know that a story is AU or OOC or PWP or anything else. My point being, I guess, that everything we write, though based on 'canon', is, or could potentially be considered, OOC. We can watch the series and the movie and try to surmise how, under certain circumstances, a particular character may react, but it's just our best guess. It's fiction. Worse, it's fan fiction. Don't get me wrong... Please, I love fan fic. I love it. When it's good, when it's alright, even when it's bad sometimes, because then you can sit smugly and say to yourself, 'I'd never do that shit.' More rambling... When writing a fic, you can sit there and go, 'Mal would do this, Zoe would do this', but you don't know, it's just what you would like to happen. To satisfy your muse or whatever you call your drive to write about a bunch of fictional characters from a cancelled TV show. I know I sound negative about fan fic and maybe even Firefly, but my irritability is more at people who write fan fic and then complain about how bad other fan fic is, the earlier mentioned OOC, AU or PWP. What if you turned the TV on tomorrow and Joss had the show up and running and he turned everything on it's ear? What if he went to a con and said that he planned an elaborate arc where Mal becomes a Reaver and kills everybody, or Simon realizes he's gay and wants Jayne, or that he's re-releasing the movie and not killing Wash or Book (yay, btw, to that thought). More point, one can not look at a fic one doesn't like and say, 'That would never happen in canon'. Because, of course, it wouldn't. Nothing I write would have happened, it's what goes on in my head, not Joss Whedon's (and the other lovely writers). You can call someone's fic poorly written, go on about grammar and punctuation, plot holes, etc, etc, etc. But at the end of the day, slash and PWP and AU and OOC will exist, some of them interesting stories, if one is not too wrapped up in 'canon' to enjoy a good tale. There is gross putrescence. There always will be. We just don't have to read it. There's my half dollar. Hope I've offended somebody, otherwise this whole thing wasn't worth it. Wow. Where the hell have I been? I look back on the last few months and I can't figure out why I haven't poked around in here for so long. I must not neglect my browncoat bretheren. Anyway, update. I'm going to CONvergence in less than a month and I should have some nifty pics of my outfit by the end of the week. And no BDHs (sad) but there are some panels that have a browncoaty appeal. Such as "3:10 to Serenity Valley" (about scifi westerns), "Renaissance of Buffy & Angel", "Previously... in the Whedon-verse", and a prop building panel with Christian Colquhoun a propbuilder and physical effects artist who worked on Firefly (among other things).

So I've been walking the world a spell, giving my ideas a chance to freshen up, (y'know, get some clean duds, mebbe some mouthwash) and basically meandering into someone else's version of the 'verse a while. Funny thing is, I look over the writing, and I mostly know which ideas are mine, which are not, but somewhere in the middle, some peculiar alchemy has worked itself, and we have a strange chimerical beast which is truly its own being. (That being said, the really good, funny Wash stuff is nothing to do with me. That's Wytchcroft. Most of the mad, bad poetical meta-bollocks is mine, though.) However, the end is in sight. And then, I'm hopefully returning to my long delayed Zen II fic - hope being the operative word ( don't scare the muse!) - refreshed and ready to perpetrate some more AnJlverse weirdness. Because this trip inside someone else's head has been a blast. It's been interesting to match my conception of the characters to someone else's, to work with a differently realised back story for some of them. I think both of us have benefitted (if only because we can burble at length without anyone yawning or giving us tired looks...) It inspires, to feel the ideas take hold, and to throw them back and forth and see what results. I...We, hope you like it. Or at least don't hate it with a passion. Still, if you [i]do[/i] hate it - we did put a label on it, so you can't say you weren't warned.:biggrin:

Ok, so I've hit a bit of a snag in production at the moment. I'm having a, sort of, Mal problem. Mal: "Well they tell you: never hit a man with a closed fist. But it is, on occasion, hilarious." Yeah, so now I'm out one pinky knuckle, cause what they don't tell you is that if your hand meets the guys cheekbone then you're out a knuckle. So just a small snag, but I'll get something up soon. I promise.:smile:

Lotsa people are 'purists' when it comes to fan fiction. I get it. But, to me, the whole point of fan fic is to take those characters and mold and manipulate and nudge and coerce and cajole...I'm digressing, the way the particular fan fic writer wants. You're free to play with the whole universe: What if: Mal never joined the Browncoats? Inara never became a companion, or became a companion of a different sort? What if Simon was too busy to pay attention to his sister's coded messages, if he read them at all? What if Zoe died in the war? What if Jubal Early in 'Objects in Space' actually did rape Kaylee? What if Badger was actually a good guy? I'm saying it would make them completely different people, who would behave in a way that may or may not even resemble 'canon'. The way the chracters would relate to each other would be different. Stories like that, I would find interesting, not 'Mal is a womanizing bastard for no apparent reason'. I like a reason, explained in the story as to why the character is different than the canon portrayal. I completely respect the opinion of those who want to see canon portrayal of characters, but I request the same respect in return for those who want to see the characters behave in new and different ways, which end up being considered OOC and AU. Fact is, if you don't like it, don't read it. I haven't mentioned PWP yet, because I'm not entirely sure what to say. I like smut. I like my favorite characters engaged in acts I am not likely see outside of hard core porn. Why? Distressingly poor sex life? Dreams of star- f**king? The fact that it might be unbearably hot? I'm going with all of the above. But those fics are like a nibble between meals, I still want the whole meal (plot, story, interaction, character development, linear movement). Another half dollar.
