Creating canon...

Hey there everyone! Was going to use Book's line from the pilot (btw - this is going to get confusing with both the pilot and the movie called Serenity...) about being out of the world for a while but I've been watching The Message instead and want to post this now before I forget (believe me, new baby equals sleep deprivation equals short-term memory loss)

Anyway, back to the point. I haven't been around these parts for a while, but now Offspring's starting to sleep a little longer at night, I'm getting my brain back and am starting to do some writing.

One thing I can't get my head round though is how the Inara leaving the ship story will play out. I haven't read all the stories on here, but I expect there's one that I'll read and decide, 'yes that's what happened'

So, the question is this, do you guys have any problem with me incorporating your plots into my own canon for Firefly, so that I can weave them into my own stories?

Didn't want to tread on anyone's toes my first go - so figured best to ask!

In the, oh, four whole minutes since writing this, I'm worried that maybe I haven't explained myself properly (I believe I mentioned the sleep deprivation)

I don't mean I'm going to take your plots and write my own stories using them. I mean I want to include them in a time-line of the past that my stories will build on. So that if you write a story where, say, Kaylee leaves the ship and starts to work for the Alliance and I were to write a story set after that, then Kaylee would no longer be on the ship in my story and she'd be working for the Alliance.

I'm making things more confusing aren't I... time to shut up and make a cup of tea...

I would have thought most fanfic authors would be flattered and delighted if you followed their particular projections of the future.

What you're actually talking about here is "fanon"--fan created canon. In some fandoms, things get read and absorbed and sometimes mixed up with what a person saw on a show. Some fannish authors don't mind when others "borrow" or adopt their ideas. Some do. In certain instances, fan writers do collaborate on a "shared universe" kind of thing.

In my experience (going back to pre-Internet zine days) there was always a sort of unspoken rule that you asked first--especially if you wanted to use a new character another fan author had created; or a specific storyline. It's common courtesy. You shouldn't just pick and choose ideas out of various fics, really.

Of course, that's my personal opinion--and I'll say for the record here that I'm very protective of any specific storyline I come up with, and generally don't share my toys with others...it's a matter of preference and experience.

Excellent rule. In the absence of a real canon like a series would give (gorram Reavers who run Fox Network go straight to *diyu* for cancelling it) permission should be sought.
