Right, right. Good call. Mal's line, directly following is "Could you imagine that? Me, with a whole passel of critters underfoot..."
and yet the captain having children is a far better thought than Jayne having children.. now there is a huge possibility!

I think Jayne would be a great Dad. We already know he's big on family and if he settled down, he'd probably be one of those really cool parents with hundreds of amazing stories to tell that you never quite knew if they were true.
But then again, if Firefly had made 7 seasons, a random child for one of the crew would have turned up (maybe Inara?)

Yanno, I was gonna say that due to his lifestyle Jayne prolly already had a few less than legit offspring running around, but then it occurred to me (thanks to the not-kissin-them-on-the-mouth comment) that he's a lot craftier than most take him for, and not a really trusting soul...
Ergo, he prolly plays it pretty safe on that aspect of things.

Pineknot, I agree that it's quite likely Starhunter that you're thinking of - in my early days of watching Firefly when I wasn't really a fan yet, I got the two a bit confused as well. Similarities: the Starhunter captain (whatever his name was) was also into renegade, less-than-legal business (in his case, bounty hunting) on a ship that didn't necessarily work all the time and had young female engineer working by herself to keep it running, and a light-skinned Black woman as second-in-command. I also vaguely remember that it had similar lighting, and also no aliens, and some big government-related conspiracy theories going - there may also have been some wild people a bit like Reavers (who I think had taken said son). The many, many differences from Firefly include that they all had British accents.

maybe your thinking of the other Joss Whedon show Angel starring David Boreanaz. He was looking for his son Connor. Angel season 3.

It was definitely Starhunter. It wasn't the worse show ever, but the guy who played the captain was a terrible actor. Although, and no one beat me, I like their mechanic/engineer person better than Kaylee. As for the success of the show, well, I found the first two DVDs at Big Lots.

Saw starhunter and boy was it bad. Honestly it was cliched and old even before it hit the air waves. I believe it was one of the worst of all sci-fi shows, maybe Firelfy if Lucas had written it, maybe it is a little worse than that. I liked the ships holographic representation it was ind of new but didn't make up for the show as a whole poorly done and poorly presented. But that is what i thought I am sure some people liked it.

Were I there during the War of Unification I would have been an Alliance Patriot, but I would have run guns for the Browncoats. No I am not a greedy baby eating monster! Gunrunning would have been the patriotic thing to do.

Not Inara. She's too smart for that. I bet in the future there is a perfect birth-control shot type thingy, so there isn't any risk. A Jayne kid is plausible, since we all know he's big on his women and wouldn't be able to get a Companion, so must settle for normal whores... who probably wouldn't be able to afford that birth-control (Heart of Gold, anyone?)
