The Great Bird

Once there was a great bird that flew over Turtle Island from the west to the east. He even flew down to the warmer lands and no one was afraid of him. He was the protector and helper to all the peoples of Turtle Island.
One day he decided to fly all the way to the end of the land in the east. Once on the coast and having a meal of fish and berries, he decided to fly out over the ocean. The great bird was quite far from Turtle Island when he saw specks on the water. He had never seen these things before so he flew lower. He couldn't identify them as he had never seen craft like these but he knew people.
The people looked frightened and were running all over the object and there was a loud sound that came from the people. The great bird flew higher, shocked to hear such a loud noise and decided to head back to Turtle Island.
Once there he landed near some people who were fishing. They looked up at the great bird and could see that he was frightened. They went over to him and gave him some water, gathering around him to soothe him.
They got the great bird back to their village and the medicine man was called to talk to the great bird. The wise man laid a gentle hand on the head of the great bird and saw what he had seen at sea. He could sense the bird's fear for himself though he wasn't hurt but there was also worry for the people of Turtle Island.
The villagers got the great bird to stay near their village for the night but he left before dawn. He wasn't sure what to do about what he had experienced and how he could protect the people of Turtle Island.
The strangers arrived on Turtle Island and over time took it over and hurt the people of Turtle Island. This saddened the great bird and he knew there was nothing he could do to help with these dangers.
Over time sightings of the great bird became less and less as his sadness grew, till he faded into a legend.
Far into the future the people of Turtle Island are starting to see glimpses of the great bird. Maybe one day he will return to the people of Turtle Island. They live in hope.
