~~"Firefly Under the Stars" Pennsylvania Shindig~~
www.myorangehat.citymax.com/shindig.html

Well, it finally happened. I got sick and tired of missing all the Shindiggity fun, so I decided to start planning one of my own! This Shindig is still in the planning stages so ANY and ALL help/suggestions will be very appreciated.

Where: My horse farm. (Harleysville, PA. About one hour NNW of the Philly airport)

When: CONFIRMED for October 9-10.

Who is welcome: EVERYONE! Bring yourself, your Firefly converts, and potential converts.

How long is the Shindig: I'm thinking a Saturday-Sunday thing.

Accommodations: I have a large house, a few extra beds, plenty of sofas, and room for sleeping bags. Also, for those with allergies(I have LOTS of animals) there are a few hotels within 15 minutes of my house.

Potential Activities:(please comment on which you would like)
-FIREFLY PROJECTED ONTO THE SIDE OF MY BARN! We can watch Firefly outside under the stars. (This could be lots of fun, but is weather dependent.)
-BBQ, cookout. I'll feed ya. Maybe hamburgers and hotdogs, maybe something a bit classier if I can find someone who is a better cook than me.
-Beer! Yes, beer is an activity. ;p (I'll have soda for those under 21, so no under aged drinking.)
-Horsie rides. I'll give anyone that wants a chance to ride on a horse, a ride a few times around my riding ring. Or if you just want to get up for a photo op. that is fine too. :)
-Conversation with fellow Browncoats about Firefly. Like I could even stop that if I tried. ;p
-Someone at FFF.net suggested those with guitars and other instruments bring them. Good idea, but I'm musically impaired so this would be up to other to do.

Soooo, that's what I have so far. Suggestions, anyone? If you would like to come, please email me through my profile or post here so that I can get an idea of how many people to expect. Thanks! :)

-MOH

You have a definite YES from 2 York Browncoats: myself, and Ryan (SteamedBao3). It sounds GREAT. Ryan says he'll be willing to cook. I'm working on the Firefly monopoly game so nicely posted by csteinme so I can bring that along if you like. Also, Ryan has made Tall Card and we can bring that too.

This a costume deal? We have those too LOL Just keep us updated!!!

Also, Ryan and I would be interested in making "First Annual Firefly Under the Stars PA Shindig 2004" shirts...nuthin fancy, just iron on...if people would be interested. We'd need a set # and sizes of course....

BTW, what's your email address? I couldn't find it on here.

Yay! Horsie rides!

Oh, yeah, I'm an OB native and I keep forgetting that FFF.net doesn't have your email in your profile(oops!).
My email addy is: PenPenAgain@aol.com

Tall card sounds great.
Monopoly sounds great.
Shirts sound REALLY cool! :D
Costumes are welcome, but remember this is a horse farm complete with dirt, so you might want something else to wear when we watch Firefly outside by the barn. :)

I still need to check to make sure my projector is powerful enough to look good. If it isn't, I'll rent one that is because now I'm married to the idea of seeing the Serenity crew ten feet tall!

Edited to fix dumb typo.

Color me counted in (or count me colored in...though that makes much less sense)!

Should be a real barn-burner!!

Hmmm...someone should compile a list of and procure the ingredients of some of the 'Loon drinks...

I might drag the family along if you say there will be other activities. Or not. I'm the only browncoat of the lot.

Have you considered which episodes you will show? Any are fine with me. I love them all.

Well, I'm always looking for a way to dirty up my Kaylee coveralls a bit, but I think I'll pass on the actual wearing of the costumes. I have plenty of Firefly-related normal clothes.

Wellllllllllllll - On second thought, maybe I'll bring 'em along for the horsie and outdoorsy photo ops.

I am in NYC right now, but maybe I could come if I could work out a train/someone pick me up at the trainstation thing, or something. I would really love to spend a weekend with fellow browncoats! It really sounds fun with all the activities you guys have described...

Just popping in, in my one free second of the weekend, to keep y'all up to date.

I've gotten lots of wonderful emails offering help. That is so shiny. I don't have anything that I need help with, right now, but as soon as things get moving I'm sure I'll have LOTS of stuff I'll need help with. Soon very soon.
I'll get back to anyone that offered help as soon as I know what exactly needs doing.

I'm looking into finalizing a date. I'm thinking Columbus Day weekend(someone else suggested this). I'll get back to y'all as soon as I can confirm that this date is indeed possible. If anyone has serious problems with Columbus Day weekend please say so.

WoW! I am sooo amazed at the response I've been getting. This is going to be a HUGE shindig. The thought of that many browncoats together makes me smile. :)

Outa time to post any more or even spell check. Bye. :)

Sure, drag the family along. Anyone is welcome. I haven't put together a full roster of activities yet because I've just started the planning. But if it is non-browncoat activities you are looking for, I have a few they could do:
-Bring your bike and ride down bike trail that passes right through my farm. Or walk down the trail. Pretty and scenic.
-Fishing. I don't know a whole lot about fishing(I just put my hook in with hotdog slice on it and pull in a fish), but the stream that runs about 300ft from my house is stocked with Rainbow Trout and you are welcome to fish there.
-I'm right down the street, maybe four miles, from a very large park complete with walking trails around the huge reservoir.
http://www.montcopa.org/parks/green%20lane.htm

I'm not sure which episodes I'll show yet. I wonder how many I can fit in before the sun comes up. :)
But I think we NEED to see:
Serenity
Ariel
Out of Gas
Objects in Space

Well, I DID plan on giving out the crappiest directions possible as a kind of test to see who could actually find the shindig. Kidding, kidding. I'll print really great directions for y'all. My place is hard to find without them cause my street isn't on any map.

I have a suggestion: trivia contest! The reason: I can provide pretty cool prizes.

I work for a large media dot-com, and one of the aspects of my job is writing reviews for TV shows and their respective box sets on DVD. I have a bunch of new, current box sets that I can bring with me as prizes (for trivia or what have you) that studios have sent. They're not Firefly, but I think they might make fans study up on their 'verse knowledge.

And no, I'm not telling which ones I have. I like my job!

YAYYYYYYYYYY!!!! I am TOO excited about this! It's so gorram cool to see so many Browncoats rally for this, and especially in PA! Doesn't get much easier for me: Firefly, food, friends, and in tha home state to boot? I'm there!

I will have to put in my 2 cents and vote for "Our Mrs. Reynolds" as one episode we view, though. Sheesh, they are ALL so good! Can we vote or pick out of a hat or something? ha ha ha

I'm working hard on confirming a date for the Shindig. I need to make sure a projector is available to rent(at a resonable price) the weekend I schedule. Otherwise, it will just be a bunch of browncoats watching Firefly on my TV duct taped to the side of the barn. :p
I'm also in the process of getting a website up for this Shindig. Updates and changes of info are so easy to loose in a thread, especially as it gets longer with more planning. I'll post a link as soon as the site is live.

I will NOT be around to respond to any messages from Friday-Sunday. I am going to WizardWorld Chicago and will be computer impaired for a few days. As soon as I get back, I'll start planning like crazy again.

I'm not entirely sure I'll be able to make it, but even if I don't, can I make some suggestions? How about a campfire with some s'mores/marshmallow roasting? Maybe some hot cider if it's cold.. I live bout 20 mins from Harleysville, but I'll be at school in State College for that time. If I can break away from homework tho, I offer myself to bring some of the best goddarned apple cider ever made: Bauman's Apple Cider. It's a block away from my house. I think having the shindig a week or two later, right in the chillyness of October would be funner, but I'm not planning the gathering, so I'll keep my thinkings to myself. ;) Anyways, have fun in Chicago, and I'll look back for the website!

I am SO excited about this Shindig! I only hope I can get time off work...and go for a 7 or 8 hour drive to the Eastern part of the state. It'll be worth it to actually talk to other people who like to talk about FF!! There aren't too many Browncoats that I've found in Pittsburgh :-(

BUMP!

And a very brief update so that this post isn't completely pointless:

Running around like chicken with head cut off, if chickens could in fact plan a shindig while headless and running.
Trying to answer all the bazillion emails I got about the shindig.

Hey 'Hat (or headless-running-chicken-thing-gone-wrong...)!

Thanks for all the leg work (again with the running)! Have you had any time to put up a web page for this cosa nostra? Might help consolidate things a bit. Mayhap you could delegate this to one of the other prospective attendees. Someone with knowledge of such stuff. Someone not me.

BTW, I was perusing (great old word, that) one of the many "how old are you" threads, and I belieeeeeve someone is a couple of days shy of a birthday......

Hope it's a good one!

Thanks for keeping us posted!

Keep flyin'!!

Glad you like the site. It is bare bones right now. I'm going to spiff it up over the weekend.

Hehehe. Funny thing is I've only ever been to two conventions in my entire life. I just picked REALLY good ones. :

Well, that's an easy enough thing to figure out. I can probably tell you off the top of my head, in fact. But first I need to know what area you are from.

I can tell you this, I'm about an hour from the Philadelphia airport. About 2 hours from Ocean City, New Jersey. And about 2 hours from Harrisburg. Any of that help?

I'm working on setting aside a block of rooms so as to get y'all a discount. I should have the details on that worked out by tomorrow. Without a discount, the hotel rooms are $99 for a room with two double beds. These rooms are quite nice and are very reasonable if you share the room and cost with a person or two.

There is another hotel that is just as close that runs about $69 a night, but that hotel is just crummy. But if you need to save some cash and are up for an adventure in "I-can't-believe-I-payed-money-to-stay-here-Land" then I'll gladly give you the info for that one too.

Also, I'm putting up people for free at my home. I estimate that I can fit 15 people. But you will be on hardwood floors and you'd be responsible for bringing your own sleeping bag or air mattress and pillow. I already have one for sure that I'm putting up and others that are going to get back to me. If you want to stake claim to a piece of my floor let me know ASAP, because it is first come first serve.

Also, the website should be completely finished by Monday(hopefully sooner). I actually have the weekend off so I can really get some work done. As always, if anyone has any questions please email me PenPenAgain@aol.com OR you can post messages on the board. :)

*bump*, and here's a question: what about bathroom facilities? You could rent port-a-johns for the weekend. My brother did that when he was having his bathroom redone. (Of course, it was waaay longer than a weekend).

Oh, and MoH, that is awesome that you can try to get lowered motel rates! Might I suggest discounts for the 2 double beds as well as rooms that could accomodate a third person? I have a feeling I may be driving a few people and I'd like to make it as cheap as possible.

This shindig is really coming along. My (orange) hat is off to ya!

Good suggestion. I'll look into renting port-a-johns. Of course my home's bathrooms will be available but I only have 1.5 bath in the whole house so it would be possible to get looong lines.

I'd like very much to pitch in, and steamedbao3's handle gave me an idea-- perhaps we should look into bringing a batch of fresh bao from Chinatown in Philly when we come.
