Non Sentient Aliens in Firefly

Well many of us know where Joss stands when it comes to aliens, just in case you didn't hear I've read he really thinks that we might be the only sentient lifeforms in the Galaxy therefore you don't see any vulcans or roswell aliens in the show.

But do any of you think there still could be aliens in firefly, maybe a type of very primitive or non-sentient lifeforms. Something maybe simple and silicon based, or let's look at the blood thirsty reavers were they exposed to cells of an alien virus or foreign bacteria on these other worlds that messed them up ?

Are there possible aliens in firefly ?

god i hope not. im with joss on this. no aliens.

cause then it become like farscape or babylon 5 or star trek and I DONT WANT THAT. just keep what makes firefly/serenity different than all the rest.

I think, if Firefly continued as a series, we may have eventually seen some kind of alien life form that was native to one of the planets in the system... but I think it would have been sometime small, like plants at most, maybe something like moss or fungus. Certainly no animals, and I'd doubt it'd have anything to do with Reavers (unless Joss wanted to go all the way and do real aliens and his whole 'we're the only intelligent life in the solar system' bit was a smokescreen), but it might have been the sort of thing that was an aspect of a job (Say, there's a moss that doesn't grow anymore after terraforming, but occasionally caches are discovered in caves and it's very valuable). Or maybe combine it with the overarching River arc and discover that an alien plant heightens psychic ability and the whole reason for the program River was in was to see how to exploit it into a useful form.. maybe, for example, usage killed people with amygdalas. ;)

Anyway, just random speculation, but in general, yeah, I don't think we'd see any alien life more complex than plants.

Yeah, those dr spock and area 51 aliens would be silly
too many aliens spoil the show

However as STARPILOTGRAINGER says some type of alien plant or fungus might be good for a firefly story

As far as plants go, I'm not familiar with hodgeberries (as mentioned in safe). Microbes, I don't believe Boden's Maladie (the train job) is an Earth disease. I could be horribly misinformed, though. ::shrug::

I'd think that maybe terraforming involves a step where you sterilize a planet, making it a nice, safe, blank slate that you can write on.

Hmm, this gets me to thinking, there were horses and cattle, but how about pet type animals? Anybody see any dogs (off the grill) or cats? Weren't there swans on the floating island? There must have been since someone with longing to see one carved one.

Must have been a long flight from earth-that-was. What animals would have been brought along?

The more I get to know people the more I like my dogs.

Yes, but to play devil's advocate (as I enjoy doing sometimes), Hodgeberries could easily be a genetically engineered type of berry (or just one I've never heard of) that's grown into common usage... and I don't specifically recall if Boden's Malady was attributed to a virus/bacteria, but it likewise could just be a disease caused by a chemical released in the mines that gets in the air and does nasty things to the neurological system.

Given the Western analogy, it might be appropriate if we had reference to the alien forms that had met the fate of the passenger pigeon.

I don't see that. Farscape, Star Trek, and the like real didn't have that many non sentient aliens (except for occasional menacing monsters. It would go against the style of the style of Firefly to have sentient aliens, but I think it might be a nice touch to have native life on one of the planets they visit.

Though I also think it makes sense that the terriforming process doesn't allow for non earth based life.
