I don't know if this was discussed already.

The first episode aired was The Train Job. So our self-identity became Browncoats.

But the originally intended first show to air, the Pilot Serenity, was not aired until after the series was cancelled.

So, if the Pilot had been the first aired, what do you think would have been the self-identity resulting from these scenes?

I almost feel it could have something to do with Crucifix Kissers.

Or Cryo-box smugglers.

Given that the actual first episode starts out in the war, and how prevalent the independence references were the series, I'm certain the moniker "Browncoats" would have been adopted regardless... it also helped that, series being cut so short, there really was much else to build on.

The very first Teaser, before the commercial break, was the Unification-Day bar, with all the fuss over "your coat has a brownish color to it"

This was the very first identifier for fans to cling to, in the days of waiting a week before the next episode aired.

I don't really think fans would have ignored the first 2 hours of Pilot Serenity to wait for the first reference in TTJ to latch onto.

I notice it only took until Saturday afternoon, less that 24 hours from first broadcast, before this Browncoat exchange was mentioned as a favorite line. And that is solely on this site, when there were several other parallel forums at the time.

Actually, that first scene of Pilot immediately transitions to the Salvage heist, 6 years later.

So maybe it would have been "Food Smugglers" or "Nutrition Smugglers"

When was the Browncoat moniker generally accepted as our nickname?
I don’t think it really matters what the episode order was, the name just fits.
