President Trump Tweeted Against His Own Bill. Now Congress May Delay the Vote

President Donald Trump’s morning penchant for firing off controversial messages on Twitter potentially derailed his administration’s policy Thursday, after he came out against a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act renewal his own Administration is pushing.

The tweet came just hours before the House was preparing a much-anticipated vote on a six-year extension of Section 702 of the FISA program, which allows U.S. intelligence agencies to monitor foreign communications.

House rejects limits on surveillance program after confusion from Trump tweets

WASHINGTON — A proposal to impose significant new privacy limits on the National Security Agency’s warrantless surveillance program failed in a House vote Thursday, despite a yearslong effort by a bipartisan group of lawmakers to bolster civil liberties protections.

Lawmakers are now taking up a bill that would extend the legal basis for that program for six years with only minor changes.

But as a prelude to final action, the House of Representatives voted 233-183 to defeat an amendment that would have limited its extension to four years and added a series of privacy protections. The vote was a significant defeat for civil liberties advocates in the debate that broke out in 2013, following leaks by intelligence contractor Edward Snowden.

Nearly all members of National Park Service advisory panel resign in frustration

Three-quarters of the members of a federally chartered board advising the National Park Service abruptly quit Monday night out of frustration that Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke had refused to meet with them or convene a single meeting last year.

The resignation of nine out of 12 National Park System Advisory Board members leaves the federal government without a functioning body to designate national historic or natural landmarks. It also underscores the extent to which federal advisory bodies have become marginalized under the Trump administration. In May 2017, Zinke suspended all outside committees while his staff reviewed their composition and work.

Once again I have to applaud those with high paying, cushy government gigs and their bravery to quit and leave their positions open for anybody else who might be much more willing to just play ball and do whatever they need to do to keep a real job in this economy.

Way to fight the good fight, cowards. I hope you regret that decision to quit and you can't find a decent job paying anything close what you got paid before.

I hear Walmart is hiring.

In private conversations, Trump has told advisers that he doesn’t think the 2018 election has to be as bad as others are predicting. He has referenced the 2002 midterms, when George W. Bush and Republicans fared better after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, these people said.

I’m pretty skeptical that the political dynamics of September 2001 would be replicated today. But regardless, this is an odd line of thought for an incumbent president and his team to be entertaining.

If Trump thinks a terrorist attack would serve his political interests — either through a blind rally ‘round the flag effect or by specifically validating anti-immigrant demagoguery or what have you — how hard is he really working to keep the country safe?

Trump Doesn’t Believe in His Own Foreign Policy. Does That Matter?

here have been a great many odd things about the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency, but one of the oddest is the vast distance that has opened up between the president and his own policies. Presidents never fully get their way on the entire range of foreign policy issues their administrations confront, although they do tend to get their way on the issues they care most about. But as I discuss in my new book, American Grand Strategy in the Age of Trump, this president’s core geopolitical beliefs and the foreign policy executed in his name have in several cases seemed 180 degrees apart.

The president clearly loathes NATO and believes that protecting the European allies is a fool’s errand, yet his administration has continued and even expanded efforts to reinforce deterrence along NATO’s eastern flank. He has repeatedly called for a new relationship with Russia, but his administration has now decided to sell lethal defensive weaponry to Ukraine, and is taking initial steps to develop a land-based, intermediate-range nuclear delivery system to counter Russian violations of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.
