Starting a new solar eclipse thread

Because the pics of Tara Reid are disturbing.
Anyway, I checked and I am an hour away from the totality of the eclipse, but I am smack dab in the middle of the next one seven years later.
My kiddo will be 21 that year, whoot!

I was driving along today and I remembered that the last solar eclipse in India had 17 people go blind/partially blind from looking at the sun. I was wondering when I would start seeing the warnings, and I get home and here they are.
Anyone wanna take bets on the number that at least partially blind themselves? I'm going with 8.

"As customers prepare for next week’s total solar eclipse, Amazon has issued a recall for some of the eclipse glasses sold on its internet marketplace, saying it was unable to confirm whether the protective ware was made by a recommended manufacturer.
NASA and the American Astronomical Society have been urging solar gazers to use glasses engineered by reputable vendors that carry the international safety standard number “ISO 12312-2.”
Eclipse glasses made under these standards block 100,000 times more light than ordinary sunglasses. Even brief, unprotected glimpses of the sun can cause blurry vision or blindness. The American Astronomical Society has spotted counterfeit eclipse glasses on Amazon in the past."

As I have suggested (humorously) you're a complete idiot if you try and view this eclipse. Not tinfoil hat paranoia, just basic caveat emptor. Have you ever returned something because it didn't work the way you thought it would? Did you ever buy something that just wasn't like the sales pitch? Yeah, who hasn't. I love my eyes, I love seeing exactly like I see now - "no touching guns."

My old man just told me today he's going down there with my step mom and they bought glasses online to view it.
I told him the same thing.... there is no way in hell I would look at that sun. Especially with some cheap glasses likely made in China. I don't watch traditional TV, so I can only hope there are tons of warnings against using these things everyday on the news and everywhere else.
Good luck people. I hope it's worth it. I'll wait until I can watch it safely on youtube a few hours later.

I'm not going to be around where the total eclipse happens, so I'm just going to see the partial. I've seen that before through a silhouette box contraption that my dad built for me and my brothers when we were kids. I'll go outside while it's happening, I'm just not looking up with or without the glasses.
I think what would be cooler is being under it for the few minutes it's a total eclipse and just see how eerie the darkness is. My old man said he remembered how all the animals get quiet during an eclipse like they know something is up. Then we got on the topic of Asimov's first story Nightfall. People are already pretty nuts though, so if a bunch of people under the full eclipse started murdering each other and burning shit down I guess we'd just call it another day in 2017.
My dad's no dummy. I'm sure he did all the research he could and knows what he bought. I just don't trust anybody saying that it would work.
