Radiation Rising After Typhoon Vongfong at Fukushima Nuclear Plant in Japan

Quote:

Record Radiation at Fukushima after Vongfong: First tests since Tuesday’s typhoon show radioactive material continues rising near ocean — Officials: We can’t do anything more to stop this, ‘depth and scope’ of contamination flowing out are unknown. Japan Times, Oct 15, 2014: Radioactivity spikes in No. 1 reactor well water — [Tepco] said there has been a sharp spike in the radioactivity of water samples taken from an observation well built by the sea… located to the east of the damaged No. 2 reactor… The well is positioned close to an underground trench by the sea that is connected to the No. 2 reactor building. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Tepco official Isao Shirai told reporters that the increased radioactivity in the water could be due to higher levels of groundwater caused by recent typhoons mixing with radioactive elements…

Not exactly headline news, you'll have to find this by searching fukushima + radiation + vongfong. But the reality is that the nuclear fuel .... several hundred tons of it... is sitting like partly-cooled lava inside the containment structure that is so filled with holes, it may as well be in a colander. Meanwhile, water is being poured over it, and then attempted to be gathered up, cleaned up, and re-used or stored. (Tritium can't be cleaned out because its part of the water molecule, and it's radioactive) Tokyo and Tepco have given up on the ice wall.

This kind of reminds me of the effort to save a patient who is bleeding out by letting them bleed all over the floor, then sucking up some of the blood and trying to re-inject it. It's just not going to work, yanno?

So we have to consider the fact that Fukushima will be leaking radioactive materials into the ocean at a massive rate for the forseeable future, and that the clockwise currents that circle the Pacific will eventually bring the radiation to Alaska, Canada, the west coast of the USA and Hawaii, and eventually be spread to other oceans. What will the impact be?

It's folly to build nuclear power plants right on the ocean, and right next to (or on top of) major earthquake faults. "What were they thinking"?

They were thinking that they should place all of their emergency backup generators and pumps for cooldown and containment below the ocean levels which occur during inclement weather.

MUON detection of reactor No 1 showed what many said all along:

The reactor fuel melted out of the reactor vessel completely.

Nothing left. This is consistent with Three Mile Island, where even a relatively brief loss of coolant caused half of the fuel to melt. Compared to Fukushima, where the emergency lasted for days, there should be no expectation that any fuel would stay in the reactor. As to where it IS, they don't know that (yet) or aren't admitting.

Meanwhile, reports of detection and release of radioactive material sound the same: They just keep hitting new record levels. May as well just put out standard report every month "New record levels found" and leave it at that. The "ice wall" failed, and all of the treatment machinery failed over time, so as far as I know there is NO control of any of the radionuclide releases.

All of that was already known, before it was built. It was never in dispute by reasonable people. It was the clear result of this decision:

This is the fifth anniversary of the devastating tsunami in northeast Japan and meltdown at Fukushima.

Despite [some] predictions that by now the cleanup would have been all figured out, nothing has been accomplished in stopping the hemorrhage of radionuclides into the ocean. Some of those radionuclides that were exploded out ... and are currently draining out ... of the power plant have half-lives of dozens of years. Some cities are still closed to returnees.

Lest we think that we have this all figured out and are safe from danger:

FPL nuclear plant canals leaking into Biscayne Bay, study confirms

Quote:

A radioactive isotope linked to water from power plant cooling canals has been found in high levels in Biscayne Bay, confirming suspicions that Turkey Point’s aging canals are leaking into the nearby national park.

Fukushima Aborts Latest Robot Mission Inside Reactor; Radiation At "Unimaginable" Levels

Quote:

Two years after sacrificing one robot, TEPCO officials have aborted their latest robot mission inside the Fukushima reactor after the 'scorpion' became unresponsive as it investigated the previously discovered hole where the core is believed to have melted. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-02-19/fukushima-aborts-latest-robot

At 530 sieverts, a person could die from even brief exposure, highlighting the difficulties ahead as the government and Tepco grope their way toward dismantling all three reactors crippled by the March 2011 disaster.
Like that's going to happen. It's been over 30 years since Chernobyl, and has that been cleaned up?

Just look at the decommissioning of San Onofre, a single, intact power plant. "Phase 2 “encompasses activities during the storage period or during major decommissioning activities...”; this phase is variable in length but up to 58 years after ceasing operation" http://sameoc.org/FD/2014/CPEN/Palmisano-SAME-Presentation.pdf except they can't even get started because there's no waste facility for high level nuclear waste.

So, if a routine decommissioning is so problematic, how do they expect to manage Fukushima?

In one of my science news mags I was reading about how cheesy the OLD reactors were but how safe the NEW ones are. One even has THREE WHOLE DAYS! of spare cooling water! (in case the pumps or power go out).

Well that's because the Russians were behind that cleanup. :)
