Been reading lately 2 things: Sean Maher came out of the closet, and also Doogie Howser was the other candidate to play Simon.

So, was Joss really looking for a gay guy to play Simon? And then Jewel is supposed to play believable love interest to this gay guy pretending to be Simon? As a fan of Jewel, I just find that patently unfair.

In his commentary on the pilot episode, Joss said many, many people read for Simon, but Sean nailed the scene perfectly. I'm sure that is why he got the job, not because he is gay.

They're actors. Jewel wasn't suppose to get literally involved w/ her co-star, and I have no doubt that Neil Patrick Harris could have done just fine. He IS Barney, after all.

It is a bit curious that both actors slotted to play Kaylee's love interest are gay.

I think Joss chose wisely.

Jewel is a big girl, and it seems she got along great with Sean anyhow. Pretty sure most actresses' husbands would prefer that their wives make out with gay actors anyway.

MAL - Nicholas Brendan or Neal McDonough

INARA - Rebecca Gayheart

KAYLEE - Miracle Laurie

SIMON - Neil Patrick Harris

Silly, I was replying to the part where NPH was one of if not the finalist, besides Sean.
