In Bushwhacked, Simon says this line and Jayne replies:
SIMON
Hmmm? Oh, no. I suppose it's just the thought of a little Mylar and glass separating a person from... nothing.
JAYNE
It's impressive what "nothing" can do to a man. Like that fella we bumped into.
He's likely stuck up under our belly about now. That's what space trash does, you
know. Kind of latches onto the first big something that stops long enough. Hey now, that'd be a bit like you and your sister now, wouldn't it?
What's this whole scene mean, starting with Simon's line, please and thanks for trying to help me.
Jayne - "It smells like crotch..."
Kaylee - "Jayne!"

Let's see:
First, Simon is thinking about the spacesuit and how little it really is to keep a person alive in space.
Second, Jayne makes a true statement about how 'nothing' (ie: space=nothing) can kill someone.
Third, Jayne is making a snarky comment about a space-suited body they ran into earlier in the episode ... suggesting the body is now stuck somewhere on the exterior of the ship because that's what space trash does -- it sticks to larger objects it runs into.
Fourth, Jayne is suggesting that Simon and River are just like space trash -- stuck on a large object (Serenity) but of no real value or purpose.
... well, that's my take on this dialogue.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Annik
... my sister's a ship. We had a complicated childhood.

Simon's afraid of going out in space in nothing more than a space suit - the "mylar and glass".
Jayne is enjoying watching him in dicomfort, so he adds some detail to the description of the dead man who bumped into the windshield when they found the ship: "That fella we bumped into." Then he compares the dead body to Simon and his sister, the "trash" one runs into in space.
He's saying Simon and River got stuck on the ship because it was the first thing to come along, and they'd probably die out here. He's saying it to watch Simon squirm.
"Dear diary, today I was pompous and my sister was crazy."

Simon's talking about what's keeping them on the inside and space on the outside.
Jayne is saying that Simon and River are space junk that have clung onto Serenity for a free ride.
He's also saying that space can kill you - when they say nothing think space.

Weird - we all answered that at once.
