Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier remained huddled inside his hotel Monday, as the reasons behind his unexpected return to Haiti and what he hoped to accomplish remained unclear.
Duvalier returned to his homeland Sunday after some 25 years in exile, adding uncertainty into an already turbulent situation.
A scheduled press conference at his hotel Monday was canceled at the last minute because the hotel was not equipped to handle the crowd, and no other location could be found, Henry Robert Sterlin, a Duvalier associate, told reporters.
Sterlin said that the former dictator had returned because he was moved by the anniversary of last year's tragic earthquake, and because he missed his homeland.
The associate said he did not know how long Duvalier was staying, and added that he was not afraid to come back.
He arrived in the Haitian capital as the nation is grappling with a political crisis, sparked by fraud allegations in a presidential election.
Duvalier, wearing a dark suit and tie, greeted supporters at the busy Port-au-Prince airport. He was traveling with his wife.

There it is again; I take it you have nothing of interest to say about this event. Sigh...![]()

Personally, I'm shocked. I can't believe anyone would let that evil cocksucker within 5000 miles of the place. There are entire generations of Haitians for whom the mere mention of the words "Ton-ton Macoute" will induce the shivering night-terrors. How could they have let him return? What level of hell is this place, where a monster like Baby Doc looks like any kind of savior?

Hello,
There are Russians who, to this day, think Stalin was a good, strong leader.
When people are hopeless and scraping the gutter, it's amazing what can seem like a good idea.

Anthony answered you perfectly:Quote:
I was incredulous as well, and what it says to me is that things ARE that much of a "hell" there now. As you said, there are so many who are still alive who remember, that it seems impossible they would want to return to that. But it seems any kind of "stability" looks good right now--maybe only to those who DON'T remember, but maybe even to some who do.
When people are hopeless and scraping the gutter, it's amazing what can seem like a good idea.
You can also view it on a much, MUCH milder front; after the insanity of eight years of Republicans, an awful lot of the country wants to return to their rule...and here, almost EVERYONE is old enough to remember! There also exist (even here) those who believe BUSH was a good, strong leader. Soooo...?![]()

Blacks, in general, are not very smart. Even here in the US, 90% + voted for Obama. It took millions of years and hundreds of mutations for the homo-sapian mind to reach its full potential in the noggin of the white man. That being said, EVEN whites do crazy things now and again.....go easy on the blacks. They can't help themselves.

Wyclef, alas, was not allowed to run, they pulled him from the ballot because he didn't have 5 years residency. Sure you could argue that he should have moved back earlier to fill the requirement, and I don't know if he's there now, he was last I heard, so maybe he'll be able to run again next election.
But realistically, the Hatian govt. changes the requirements to run whenever they want to, and have in the passed to ban populist candidates.
All of that said, Wyclef Jean would undoubtedly have made a better president than Rene Preval, who, IMHO, is an unmitigated disaster, as was Duvalier, as was Alexandre. The only one I have any respect for so far is Aristide, who is in exile.
Wulf,
Kudos for digging up the video
Niki,
Why are you snarking Wulf, again, who made an actual comment about an actual Hatian candidate for president.
I somewhat agree with Wulf, they'd be better off if Wyclef were president, even if the idea sounds absurd. He was just barred from the ballot.
My personal choice would be Aristide, but he's not allow to run either. That's corruption for you, and also Haiti.
The outside manipulators, the US and France, should back off.

Mike, Anthony, everyone actually,
Personally, I think it's a trick.
Someone is supporting Duvalier because Duvalier is an idiot, and will believe that he can in, but they're not doing it to win.
The problem is that Preval cannot run again, and so has chosen a hand picked successor, who won the plurality, but cannot win a runoff.
So, Preval has been trying to rig the run off.
The accusation is that the US and France are trying to install Duvalier against Preval's chosen successor, who I think is Celestin.
But what would really happen in a runoff between Celestin (or whoever it was) vs Duvalier? Duvalier would lose, hands down.
Ergo, IMHO, it's a trick. By making the alternative to a continued Preval govt. "Baby Doc" Rene Preval guarantees his continuation of power.
Which is what the US and France really want as well.

Thanks DT, Niki is only ever less-antagonistic when I (on very rare occasions, agree with her a little bit)
As to Wycleff, don't get me wrong. I wouldn't want him to be Prez here. BUT, of all the candidates, he would have done the most good for Haiti.
Haiti is about as bad as it can get right now.
