Classic BSG ending:
In MY imagination, the transmission in Hand Of God was over 200 yahrens old, and when Earth is found by the Galactica, it is suitably advanced technologically to help destroy Baltar's invading Cylon army.
Yet the Cylon threat is not gone completely...

What's YOUR take?

AND- can anyone who read Richard Hatch's books recommend them?
I'd *love* to get & read them if they really tie up all the plot lines.

Hand of God : The gamma signal they picked up would have been ancient (as per Boomer) in their home galaxy, but it's not known how long it had been traveling when Apollo found it in this galaxy. I tend to think that regardless of the current time, the Earth would not have been able to assist the Galactica in defeating the Cylons. The episode is cherished by me for giving us a glimpse of what the show would have looked like moving forward. Sheba let her feelings for Apollo be known to him, and he, for the first time, possibly was ready to move ahead in a relationship, so long after Serena's death. By the nature of the agreement Adama made with Baltar for his assistance in destroying the Cylon base ship, Baltar would have been left marooned on an inhabitable planet with short-range communications only. In time he might have been able to contact another race or races to help him rejoin his Cylon friends. Meanwhile, Season 2 would have continued with the new story line of Apollo being with Sheba romantically, while Starbuck continued to romance Cassie and other ladies in distress. Jolly and Stringbean would have come out of the colonial closet, proclaimed their love to all, and invited everyone to their joyous celebration featuring plenty of ambrosia and victuals.

I think you are right on the money with your interpretation, as I thought the same thing. I remember getting chills watching the transmission at the end of the episode. When it was canceled I was very much hoping for some "tv movies" to continue the story. They were mega popular at the time, and for crying out loud BG was about 60% 2 hour episodes(2-parters) anyway. The series just begged to continue. Instead we got that 1980 mess(which I admit is comfort food, but nothing more).
Never read any Hatch's books. They may be great. Too busy on still searching for the 'perfect' Trek novel, as I have heard some TNG novels put the series to shame.

I was watching "The Return of Starbuck" on Hulu the other day, and I couldn't make it to the end...

Not even knowing Patrick Stewart was the Cylon.
