So, at the end of Ariel, Jayne's in the airlock, jusst coming to, and he's all confused. If you believe the subtitles (and my ears, at least sometimes) Mal says:
Quote:
Seems to me we had a solid plan. Scruth, you might say. But what I can't figure out, is what you were doing 'round the back exit.
Of course, an online script I found says that the word is "smooth", not "scruth". I looked in online dictionaries for "scruth", but no dice. So I googled it. It's fairly common in URL's (which is less than helpful) and it's a not-so-common name, and it shows up a fair amount in websites in some other language that appears to be Gaelic. Or maybe Welsh, or Celtic, just going by proper nouns I saw near it.
Regardless of whether it's what Mal actually said, I think it's a very cool word. Anyone know what it means? (And, yeah, if this sounds familiar, Google pointed me to another thread here on FFF.net, but the question was posed among several others, and the thread went the way of comparing Firefly to various points in American history, then going into great detail on the causes of the civil war.)

I fired up my DVD just to check...
Seems very odd I never even noticed him saying such a word...the heck does it mean?

He didn't say scruth, as I doubt such a word exists in english, he says smooth. I watched "Ariel" just yesterday (again), he just slurrs the word out like most western-style speaking does. I can see how one could mis-hear it.
Jayne: "How big a room?"

Damn. I so wanted it to be a real word. Or at least a Firefly word.

Its very oddly slurred, thats for sure...
I still say it could be something else, but it sounds more like smooth now..

I think Mal was refering to the earlier conversation he had with Zoe about wanting things to go smooth, and they never do.
Jayne: "How big a room?"

Heck, that's nothing. For years, after watching "Superman: The Movie", I swore up and down that the following was a line delivered by General Zod in the beginning of the film:
ZOD - "You will bow down before me, Jor-El. I swear it, YOU WILL BOW DOWN BEFORE ME! Both YOU, and then one day...YOUR ASS!!"
Okay, he said, "heirs." I was only 10. What did you expect? People mishear crap all the time. My best friend thought Zod said the same thing, too...so I don't feel so silly.
Sigh.
Okay, maybe a little.
