Is the show actually any good?
I mean it as a genuine question as I saw the pilot and wasn't bowled over by it so never went any further. It reminded me too much of The X-Files which I still love and I didn't want to take on another show to watch so it lost out. But more recently I have been thinking about catching up.
How does it compare to X-Files?
Is it like any other show or does it stand alone?

I really dig it. It's not really much like the X-File at all, beyond the surface detail of there being an FBI agent and strange occurrences. The basic premise (and this is a bit of a season 1 spoiler) is that

there is a second, parallel/alternate dimension Earth, and that the barrier between the two Earths has been broken. The breaking of that barrier is destroying reality on the "other" Earth, and so they have begun a covert war against our world, thinking if they destroy us, their world will be safe
. There's a lot more to it than that, particularly regarding the character backgrounds and such, but that's the over-arching premise.

Plus it includes a card-carrying Mad Scientist and the walking embodiment of snark as lead characters.
Seriously, the show is worth watching for Walter alone.

Which was a pleasant surprise for me, as I was only familiar with Noble from Lord of the Rings, where he was not exactly an endearing fella.

As more and more people move to DVR devices, is the time slot really that important anymore?
I ask because I really don't know, and have only anecdotal and personal experiences to go by. I don't watch TV in "real time" anymore - I DVR it and watch on MY schedule. So I might watch Fringe at 6:30 on a Saturday, or 9:00pm Sunday. Most of the people I know are the same way - that's why I ask. Or do so few people have DVRs that it's an insignificant ratings statistic?
