What were the things you didn't see the 1st time you saw the show but you liked the after you saw it a few times?

For example I didn't notice the no sound in space (I was too caught up in the plot and BGM), and I didn't notice the alliance officers looked like doormen until I saw the commentary, infact I thought the uniforms were kinda cool!

What 'bout everyone else?

Too many to list. There were a BUNCH of other people's favorite moments, favorite quotes, etc., that I never caught even after watching an episode 5+ times.

a couple off the top of my head:

The "Jayne, grab your weapon" double entendre

Jayne always touching things

ALL of the Blue Sun references

It took me forever to figure out the layout of the ship. I'm still not sure I've got the cargo bay all figured out (where all the catwalks are and where they lead to, etc).

The word "shiny". I swear I never heard them say that word until after I got the DVDs.

a bunch more I'll probably remember later...

Wow, it's a wonder I got into this show at all, in retrospect it looks like I wasn't paying attention at all.

I'm totally with you on the Blue Sun references. Those went right over my head the first time through.

I also spent a lot of time trying to figure out the layout of the ship. Some of the deckplan threads on this site helped me out a lot.

I liked Mal using the crew members name in Out of Gas to countermand the other ship captains order after he gets gutshot.

Most of the things I noticed a second (or third, etc) time around were non-verbal reactions of characters.

The look on Zoe's face when Wash gets up and says, "bastards not going to get days" in War Stories.

Zoe's easy hefting of the bag at the beginning of Shindig after Mal had just whined about how heavy it was (although if it hadn't been for the commentary I probably wouldn't have gotten that one).

These are just the ones that come to mind right now.

I think it was in Trash, the "She's in Congress?" sceen... When Jayne pushes the, what is it a tin, at Wash, look at Zoe's face... the "protective" expression just kills me!

The Blue Sun signs and symbols that pop up throughout the series. I am noticing them all the time now.

I am catching all the Mandarin phrases now. The first time I ever saw the episodes on TV, I always thought they were mumbling.

After hearing the background commentaries, I especially liked the scene where Wash is carrying the large container of medical supplies up the hill behind Mal, puffing from the exertion. Apparently it really was heavy, and he wasn't just acting. But i missed the whole thing on the first viewing.

First view, I thought the sidearms were just guns. I didn't pay attention to the detail of their construction until 2nd viewing, and that they were obviously still firing bullets but with a lot more mechanical beauty and electronic sound effects thrown in to emphasize their "newness."

I didn't get the connection between River slashing Jayne's shirt and the shirt having the Blue Sun logo on it until umteen viewings later.

For 'Objects in Space', I got the feet touching everything, and the reification / objectification of items and people first time round, which i thought was cool and very dark. However, it wasn't until I listened to Joss's background commentary that i felt the full impact (nausea?) of his existential theme for this episode. THEN Jubal Early's final "Well... Here I am..." makes perfect sense, given his situation. Thank goddess for the commentary on this episode!

Alot of the guns in firefly are older guns you can still find today. Like the gun Dobson (the fed) used was a Astra Model 400 from around 1930's. Then their are alot of more modern guns also. One of my favorite things is to ID gus on firefly.

One exchange I didn't notice until a few viewings occurred in OiS...
Jayne to Wash: "You wanna go little man?"
Wash: "Only if it's someplace with candlelight."

Wash and his magic three switches I didn't notice that until I listened to the commentary for "War Stories".

In "Ariel", when Jayne is waiting to rendezvous with the guy with the stolen hospital uniforms, it so happens that they are crossing paths in front of one of those Telefonix kiosks, where Jayne originally called the Alliance agent. I didn't notice that until about the fifth viewing.

They can have my "Firefly" DVDs when they pry them from my cold, dead fingers....

Book and River: discuss faith as it applies to religion and the altruistic belief in something larger than oneself regardless of whether it makes sense or not. Faith is in the fact that it doesn’t make sense, and your willingness to accept it at face value is the true measure of your devotion. “You don’t fix faith River, it fixes you”

Inara and Fess (Magistrate’s son): discuss faith as it applies to the faith of oneself being the catalyst that propels us not only into maturity but the ability to do what we once thought impossible. In Our Mrs Reynolds when Saffron starts crying because of Mal and Kaylee tries to comfort her, Jayne's big mitt enters the shot and pats Saffron's shoulder tentatively. My hubby and I burst into laughter at that one and had to rewind. It was soooo Jayne!

The fact that everything River says is either a portent to things to come, past information she shouldn't have anyway of knowing, or people's thoughts as they are happening. There is a dual meaning to everything she says, I just love disecting it. Seriously, the first time I watched it on TV, I am embarrassed to admit that I just thought she was crazy.

There's a wonderful little reaction shot from Zoe when Jayne adds his money to the pot to go "buy" Mal and Wash in War Stories. I didn't notice it till I watched the episode for about the 10th time.

I also missed all the Blue Sun stuff until I listened to the commentary for Serenity.

I'd have to say that I really didn't notice how tactile Jayne was until someone mentioned it in one of the threads and then I was seeing it left right and centre. Also the Blue Sun logo, I noticed it from the very first, but it wasn't until later when I knew what it really was that I started seeing it EVERYWHERE. So yeah, I know they've already been mentioned, but those are mine.

I didn't notice River stealing bread from Jayne's plate until recently. . .actually until Mahealani pointed it out. . .

It took forever to connect River attacking Jayne with the whole Blue Sun thing. . .

I didn't notice until about the third time all the way through that the badge the Sherrif wears in TTJ, is identical to the badges worn by the lawmen in "Safe" and identical to the badge flashed by the Marshall in "The Message". . .

I didn't notice how completely choked up I get every time I hear the opening guitar riff to "The Ballad of Serenity" until I was curled up on the couch with Mahealani a few weeks ago and as we were watching, when the song came on, she reached back and caressed my hair, which is what she ALWAYS does when I'm visibly choked up and she wants to console/comfort me.

There was something I caught just yesterday evening, when I was rewatching the pilot on my DVD set. At the first dinner, where Book asks if he can say grace, Jayne (who's sitting next to Book) actually gets this utterly solemn look on his face and bows his head in prayer.

To me, that pointed out a lot of respect in the relationship from the beginning, and it may have contributed to their growing friendship as time went on.

I am probably stating the obvious to alot of you guys but I was watching OoG and thought how the crew of the ship that the capt shoots Mal is kinds the antethesis of the crew of Serenity. If you look you can see the counterpart to Jayne and Wash and Zoe and of course Mal only of course they're bad guys.

To tell you the truth. . .

I think that may have been something that happened between Summer and Adam more than River and Jayne. . .but assuming it was an in-character thing, I think it was simply a matter of River being in her more 'child-like' state which is always whimsical and playful. If it IS an 'in-character' interaction we see, then Jayne's reaction is truly insightful to the nature of his character. Joss knew all along that Jayne is really a big softie because of the way he acts towards Kaylee, and that is confirmed in "The Message" when we learn that he has been sending money home to mommy. Joss may very well have put that interaction on the tail end of the episode in order to 'plant the seed' in our minds that Jayne is a decent sort after all. . .he just does monumentally stupid and selfish things at times.

Took me a couple of watch's to catch that Kaylee is wearing the dress she had, more or less, on when Mal asked her to be the mechanic in OoG again in the Message during her and Simon's "date".

Also took a couple times watching to catch alot of the other things posted here, Jayne wearing the same striped shirt in OMR and HoG, the Blue Sun labels...actually, I think the only one already listed that I DID catch the first time through was River stealing Jayne's bread...LOL

I just re-watched The Message and figured out that Mal and crew initially thought the lawmen were after them for the Lassiter they stole in Trash. They didn't realize right away that they were coming for Tracey.

Not sure how I missed this, but in the pilot there's a shot that tells everything about Jayne. It's after River has been operated on, things are quiet while she is fighting death. You see Jayne on the catwalk looking into the infirmary, hunched over, twisted in agony, thinking his little sister is going to die.

I was just watching one of Joss's interviews from the old Firefly official site, and he mentioned that it was supposed to be cantonese and not mandarin. I think we're lucky it was mandarin, because people mispronouncing cantonese sounds even goofier in my opinion. I shudder just thinking back on Buffy Season 7 and the "cantonese-speaking" potential slayer.

Yeah, I have to admit I had the same problem. I thought it was some futuristic language that Joss came up with. Matter of fact, I would brag to people who hadn't watched the show that that was a cool thing about it. OK, I've said too much...

And I didn't put two and two together the first watching of Buffy with Firefly until now, either. Funny.

I have to agree with all the above posts plus one...

The scene in OoG when Mal is closing everything up behind him on his way to the bridge. Until I watched the commentary and heard Nathan Fillion point it out I hadn't really just sat there and enjoyed that little stretch. The scene and the music work so well together it just brings a tear to my eye when I watch it now.

Oh, and I've gotta check out that carbonite Solo before I turn in. Thanks for the point.

I just put in Ariel to watch again, and I noticed that the piece of trash Wash picks up to throw at the dump just happens to be the catalyzer from the port compression coil -- and it's in perfect condition!

I just noticed that in "Heart of Gold" when Inara is first talking to Nandi that she starts to make an excuse for not waving Nandi sooner. At first I thought it was because Nandi was shunned or they just lost touch. Now I think it's because Inara is sick or dying and is avoiding her old friends.

Hi. Fisrt time poster, long time lurker.

I've been watching the episodes while I treadmill lately.

I noticed recently in "Jaynestown" that both Jayne and Simon leave their coats in the tavern, and don't have them when they board Serenity.

I'm not sure about Simon, but Jayne wears the same jacket in "The Message". I guess he could be one of those guys who acquires multiples of what works for him.

I also wondered about the pictures on Jayne's wall above his weapon alcove. Girlie pix? Family? Both?(eeww)

Also loved Kaylee leaving the bow in her hair after she's changed out of her ball gown. That's something I'd have done.

I think they do resemble each other, but not the same actor. Skunk was played by Craig Vincent, and the guy in TTJ was David Reynolds.

Sometimes I "watch" Firefly while working on a website or doing some other craft.
I find myself listening to the dialogue (and the music) very intently, and I really hone in on what's being said...or not said.
I noticed that the theme of "Jaynestown" is Symbols.
Book speaks of the Bible, and later his hair, as a symbol.
Doesn't Inara equate virginity as a state of being, which is sort of a way of saying it's a symbol?
The statue of Jayne is also a symbol to the Mudders.
I really like this episode. It's very funny and quite touching at the end.

Funny the things you notice while you're listening to the show rather than watching.

In the train job at the very begening in the "Aliance freindly bar come uni day" the belly dancer gives Mal a slip of paper. Aparently his contact to Nishka.

I never caught that they were saying gorram or rudden or shiny untill i saw them show up in fanfiction. I saw it and was all like, WTF? The next time I watched an episode they showed up and it was like, ohhhhhhhhh.

Never caught onto the cool cameral work untill i saw the special features thing and Joss or somebody was like, "Yeah, nobody does zooms or focuses anymore, and especialy not when doing the Computer Animated stuff of the ships flying around and stuff."

Blue sun crap just went whoosh right over my head.

Mal: Hell, I'd do this job for free!

CGI Zooms and pans and focuses and vibrating 'cameras' and whatever the hell 'rack mounts' means -- that CGI stuff is so awesome and amazing when you think about it, but it's so seamlessly integrated into the scenes that you don't really notice it (which is the goal, I guess)

In Bushwacked, when Serenity docks with the other ship you see an external shot with the trap grabbing Serenity's belly. Then later, when Mal is checking for the trap, the same footage is shown on their display in the cockpit. Even if Serenity had camaras on it's hull it couldn't get that shot. It'll bug you every time you see it, garentied.

Well, actually my "obsession is with FireFly rather than Star Wars. A friend of mine I converted pointed me to it. It's a great little gag.

I think that the makers of FF are not taking themselves so seriously and putting in little jokes like that makes this show better then most others.

It's also funny details like this that makes me love "The Simpsons" so much.

I noticed in The Message that Mal's got a little bag he's carrying spare ammo in, but I didn't notice til recently that that same bag is hanging on the wall in his room. I think I saw it in Serenity, or maybe it's above his head when he wakes up in Our Mrs. Reynolds.

In Out of Gas, when Mal first wakes up, I suddenly heard Inara saying something about, "It's alot of blood", and Jayne says, "He's seen blood before." (or Jayne speaks first. It's very late) If you read the transcript, they're having a whole conversation where Inara thinks they should clean up Mal's blood that's all over the ship so he doesn't have to see it. There's also a Wash/Zoe conversation going on in the background about him getting birthday cake off the floor so she can have a piece.

Also, you can see Wash's dinos at various times on the bridge, just at the bottom or the edge of the frame, and when the Feds are ransacking his & Zoe's room, looking for River & Simon.

I've been putting FF on in the background while doing net stuff recently, and upon a rewatch of 'Ariel' I happened to glance up and really watch as Simon is studying River's brain readout. I can't believe that I /never/ noticed this:

As soon as Jayne tells Simon that the plans have changed, we see a shot of River and her readout - and all of a sudden it starts to light up, signalling, I assume, intense activity in just about every section of River's brain.

Seconds later, she starts screaming, Jayne covers her mouth, and Simon pops the disk out - and then River starts babbling 'nonsense' about the hands of blue blokes.

Which means that Simon has a record of River's brain activity when she's precoging - it's right there at the end of that disk. He just has to find it.

Curse Fox for never letting us get there!

Actually, I believe he does notice the odd brain pattern, at the beginning of War Stories. He just doesn't have a clue what it means, or what sets her off. She keys in on strong emotion for sure.

In TTJ and BW you see the Alliance flag on crates they took. The flag is blue on one half with red and white stripes on the other (thirteen in fact), in the center is a red rectangle with two large yellow stars on one side and four smaller ones on the other side. This is obviously a combination of American and Chinese flags, although todays Chinese flag has only one large yellow star with the four smaller ones. I guess the Alliance flag could represent a binary system with four core planets, or not. Guess I'll just have to corner Joss and torture the info from him.

It's a nothing part til you don't got one, then you have to go to ebay.....aaaaagh!

I missed the indian in the wheelchair and the actual dogs in the cages in Serenity.

I missed the hookas in Inara's shuttle.

I saw the hookas in HoG, but missed the pot plants.

Brings a little more light to Joss' joke about being too stoned in the Serenity comentary.

I missed the patch/sewing to Mal's coat in TTJ where he was shot in Serenity.

It took me two viewings of the series in the DVD order to realize that Kaylee mentioned to Mal on two occasions (in 2 separate episodes I think) that they need a new thingamajig (compression catalyzer? something like that)--the very thing that broke in Out of Gas. I thought it was very cool, provides a bit of continuity/foreshadowing.

The other thing that I couldnt make out until I listened to the commentary was in OiS, when River says 'Don't make faces' to Mal. That adds an added doubt to the viewer that maybe River indeed was part of the ship, who could see what Mal was doing. (How did she do that though?)

This may seem simple, but it took me like 3 times to notice this.
Mal says many times he does not want God on the ship, etc. In the beginning of the first episode, he kisses a cross that is around his neck, as if he knows god is on his side, just before they are left on the planet and basically lose the war.

OK,

Joss makes the stoned joke at the very beginning of the Serenity comentary.

The plants are in the HoG house there is one potted plant in the gun fight scene and there is another few (I think) outside. I know there is one in the house near a window for sure. Now I don't think these are really pot plants, but they are sure designed to look close enough.

Maybe one of y'all can help me out. In "The Message" script, there's a reference to a package that Inara palms and hides away. One of the threads on this board says that it's actually in the episode when Kaylee and Inara come up to the post kiosk, but I've slo-mo'd through that sequence ten times and I don't see it.

I need a road map ... or did they cut it out?

Two things i missed was:

1. in the message book and mal are talking about the plan for book to talk to walmack and not give up tracey when he walks in.

2. I didnt realize that in the message when jayne gets his package he does waht he does to almost everything he gets in the series: he touches, shakes then smells the box

That was definitely made clear in the script, but in the aired/DVD episode, they made it far more ambiguous what their plan was (for dramatic purposes, I imagine)

Thanks, Shiny! That was bugging me no end.

In regards to the conversation with Tracey, it was clear in the script that they at least tried to tell him their plan, and he wouldn't let them finish. Not so much in the episode, unless you listen hard to fill in the blanks of what ISN't said.

Another part I didn't feel was clear was that in the script Simon actually did try to help Tracey when he was dying, but there wasn't anything he could do. In the scene as filmed, he pretty much only hands him a hanky.

I guess they needed to shave time so they could expand the ending, but... Oh well, I do agree with changing that, it turned out to be one of the most beautiful scenes in the whole series.

Just finished with my seventh viewings of all the DVDs. I've read all of this thread and don't think anyone has mentioned this yet.

You know how in the commentary for "Serenity" that Joss says the out-of-focus shot of Inara and her client was representative of the orgasm?

Okay, flash forward to the last episode, "Objects in Space." While River is walking through the ship and reading the thoughts on everyone's mind, she sees Wash and Zoe cuddling on the bridge. It is obvious she is feeling the emotions that they are feeling...and there is another out-of-focus shot just before she walks away in that scene.

I've been rewatching Serenity and thinking that's the same kid in the scene with Book walking, where the Brutus guy is trying to get him to come on board. It's hard to tell, because the kid really makes an effort to keep his face away from the camera. Just something about him.

Watched Serenity for the 5th or 6th time the other day and I just noticed what they did to Simon's eyebrows to make him look 'sinister' during the first half of the pilot. Up through working on Kaylee they are pointed in the middle. After that they flatten out to normal, and it really takes the 'evil' edge off of his appearance.

During the "Brainscan" scene, watch the 3D brain image carefully. In the last few seconds before it dissolves------just as Jayne starts lying about "meeting out the back in five"------green and red colors start erupting in parts of River's brain......

I didn't notice the fact that they spoke Chinese, I just thought only they knew a few Chinese phrases. Plus, in Trash, when Mal sits down beside Saffron to comfort her as she's crying, it took me a couple times to figure out that before he even sat down she had his gun. But really, none of entire series made sense, since it was aired just weird. But now it all sets into place.

When Jayne fires Vera, the first shot does indeed take out the breaker, but after pausing for a beat, Jayne fires subsequent rounds that slam into the window he was just told not to shoot, exposing the shipjackers to the void and sucking them into the black.

I didn't realize on my first couple of viewings that Jayne purposefully disobeyed Mal's order to get in some quality vengence time.

I didn't see it that way. The way I understood it, all Mal was saying was that if they shot the window, it wouldn't do anything except kill those two guys, but the Serenity crew would still be dead because the net would still be active. Mal wasn't saying "don't kill them" because he didn't want to kill anyone, he was saying go for the net instead because that's the only way they're going to live through this. After Jayne took care of the net, then he was free to go for the window.

Something I noticed with part of my brain the first time, but only just recently realized what it meant:
In Heart of Gold, when Jayne's refusing to go help, he's got on one of his t-shirts.
When they're walking up to the whorehouse, he's got on a striped button up shirt.

He dressed up for the whores! That's so sweet, in an extremely Jayne way....

Something I just noticed last night when rewatching Objects in Space.

Whatever Early is, he's no River (i.e., the BlueHands haven't made him telepathic or anything).

When Early locks the crew in their quarters, Kaylee's lock doesn't engage (or if it did, I didn't see the red light come on). that's probably how he knew her name when he found her in the engine room; he probably woulda' checked that room. When he finds the young girl (not River [the warrant would've included a picture], and definitely no Companion) puttering around the engines, he puts two and two together and calls her "Kaylee."

Only a minor thing, but that always bugged me as to how he knew her name.

The "knowing Book isn't a Shepherd" thing is still problematical though. Maybe there was some subtle physical quirk that Early picked up on.

Well, it's probably been pointed out somewhere else, but I literally just noticed that the opening credits run through the colors of the spectrum.

It's a combination of special effects (in the logo), lighting, and filters, but if you look at it in sequence, it goes from red to orange to yellow to green to blue to purple. Only at the end when you see the ship flying over the horses does it switch to all colors.

Symbolic of the crew and ship combined make a whole? You decide.

The "knowing Book isn't a Shepherd" thing is still problematical though. Maybe there was some subtle physical quirk that Early picked up on.

I think Early knew book was not a shepard because Book is actually a retired bounty hunter.

Another interesting verbal thing I noticed is that Mal and most of the crew say "Beaumont", like the town in Texas, and I only just recently found out it's actually Beaumonde.

I'll have to listen to that again, I never noticed the "it was just from watching him" part, the knowing he was a man of action does not perclude Book being a bounty hunter. I'll listen again this weekend. Thanks for the heads up.

Yes, Simon/Sean is very proper and enunciates everything very clearly. Joss even makes fun of him in the commentary to Serenity, about how in the editing room they laughed at how he has such a clear, crisp "P" sound when he says "ship" (actually, I've noticed the pronouced 'p' sound from Sean in many other instances, too)

Hey kinda new here. The stuff I saw was in Heart of Gold. 1 The gun Wash uses to shop at the bad guys in the hold is a revolver but the sound effects are for a semi auto. 2 He never pulls the trigger cuz the chamber never spins. Also on the opening credits whe Mal and Zoe are in the shoot out form the pilot. Zoe uses her hand to cock her gun but misses and has to try again. (That last on is on all of the eps)

Okay, here's some stuff I noticed.

First, on the cover of the DVD disk 3 Jayne is holding Mal's gun.

Second, in the scene in the Message when Kaylee is listening to Tracey's tape in the engine room, there is an airplane throttle quadrant right next to where her hammock is hanging. This is just a piece of set design, but it is always neat to recognize something on the sets.

Third, in the Message when Simon has Tracey hooked up to a heart monitor it is slowly going beep,... beep,... beep but when Tracey sees Kaylee it quickens up to a beep, beep, beep. Simon seems to notice this and looks anoyed.

I didn't notice the first time around that despite Jayne equipping Vera in War Stories and running around with it in the gun battle, he NEVER fires it. In fact I don't think he ever used it. Most likely the gun was just a stage prop and not particularly functional.
