I've been thinking about this question a lot lately, actually. I've come to a conclusion that I haven't heard from anyone else, but a lot of people have ultimately agreed with me.

The best thing in life is relief.

Relief from tension. Relief from pain. Relief from loneliness. Relief from sadness. Relief from drudgery. Relief of simple human instincts. Most things I've seen held up as life's greatest are all things that relate, somehow, to relief.

Before I thought along these lines, I would say joy. Serenity, even. But the greatest joy, the greatest serenity, comes at the end of a trial, and is held up in comparison as... Yep, a relief.

Seriously, being accepted as a loved person is what's best in life, IMHO.

Is that not a relief? A relief of our human desire to connect with other humans, a relief of loneliness, a relief from fear and worry and anxiety that we might not be accepted?
I'm not disagreeing on your particular point. Being accepted and loved rank right up there with me, in ways I can't express, I just think the reason they rank so high is that they relieve a certain tension within me.
