Just watching this week's episode of "Law & Order", and I couldn't help noticing the judge's name in the case - Judge Malcolm Reynolds. :) Think that was on purpose, or just a coincidence?

Since he was a judge I assume he was wearing a black robe instead of a brown coat, right?

Martin, Melvin, Mark, or Mike Reynolds sound like everyday names to me, but Malcolm Reynolds? No, that was definitely on purpose. Which is awesome!

Had to be on purpose - maybe ABC buddies of Nathan's?

If it was on purpose it wouldn't be due to Firefly/Nathan fans at ABC since L&O is an NBC show.

I kind of envision it as one or two "closet fans" on the writing staff who snuck it in there, kind of as a wink-and-a-nod to the staff at Castle and to Joss, as a bit of an appreciation, and a way of saying, "Hey, we're still thinkin' about y'all!"
In other words, I don't think it was a NETWORK decision, as much as just a small individual decision.

According to IMDb.com that would have been a repeat from last year (Season 19, Episode 7), with Ned Beatty playing the judge. None of the writers credited have any connection to Joss, at least professionally, so probably just fans.

I suspect they are all interconnected.
I think L&O is a Dick Wolf Production.
I think Sentinel was a Dick Wolf Production.
Sentinel was about a cop with Extra Sensory Perception, or heightened sensory detection, or super powered senses, and was played by Richard Burgi, who later played one Lt Womack who chases down a Firefly craft with River Tam on it, albeit looking for Pvt Tracey.
L&O was also a star vehicle for Richard Brooks, among others.
I would not be surprised if the writers (Joss being a Writers Guild bigwig) or Studio or Production company has other links to or fans of Firefly.

Clever catch.
Seems there's a constant " is it, or isn't it " guessing game going on w/ writers and the fans when it comes to shout outs , subtle or not, and favorite tv shows. Many times, there are just phrases which get associated to a show, a character, or what ever, but might not have any intentional reference to anything specific. The term 'heart of gold' comes to mind. Obviously, that's been around for a good while. But fans of Firefly might take such a remark and run w/ it, knowing full well its reference to the episode by the same title, even if there was no specific intent.
If a name like Malcolm Reynolds or Jubal Early comes up, or say , a reference to a universe of only shrimp....then I'd say odds are there's something to it.

The T.Rex they call JANE!
