Someone on another board I go to -a board NOT related to Firefly, and someone who I didn't even know was into it (!)- found this article on wikipedia, and noted some possible similarities to Inara.

Thanks for the link! And, yeah, Inara has the social mannerisms of a Geisha, but the sexual practices of a trained European Courtesan. What really struck me, as uncanny, when comparing her life to Inara’s are the reasons she retired and her life long battle with a kidney condition, which nearly killed her. That sounds a wee bit too familiar.

I'll have to check out her book. I've read Memoirs of a Geisha, the one she sued for the inaccuracy of her personal account of her experiences and I’m fairly certain Morena has stated that she also read Memoirs while playing Inara (I’m too lazy to look for the source right, now)

Exactly. Also, at the other board, they haven't heard. I'm debating telling them... Told me Inara is their favourite character.
