Well, I kind of have the same issue with Mal and River, to be honest. I know Joss said Miranda made River better, but I find it hard to believe that she wouldn't still be a little bit word salad and traumatized. How can you really know if the relationship is what she wants, or consensual?

And Jayne, in a regular relationship with someone on the crew? Yeah, he shows remorse over the kid taking the bullet for him in Jaynestown, and he sends money home to his parents apparently, and he's not abusive to the blonde in Heart of Gold. There's plenty of signs that he has some potential for good behaviour. But how he acts otherwise is like Id personified. It's really not relationship friendly, not unless he found someone similarly uninhibited by certain social standards, and possibility with the same level of interest in guns, sex, money, cigars, and booze. It'd also probably have to be pretty open, too, because I don't see him giving up whorehouses. All of this, all of Jaynes vices are part of what makes him such a fun character. I don't think that getting rid of those vices would be where his character development was going. Looks to me like he was on an arc about learning loyalty to his crew, instead.

And if River is halfway sane now, she is no longer quite the person we saw in the series, so who knows what she wants?

i have a feeling that jayne would've been killed off later on. probably in a noble last stand situation.

at the starfury/T2 convention this last weekend, I saw a woman having a t-shirt, that on the front said Moonbrain + Merc being bunkmates, and on the back it said it´s gonna Rayne :-)
