When did you know you were hooked on Firefly?

Me? It was the first episode aired: "The Train Job".
I knew I was watching something special when Mal walks up to the bar and orders his drink in Chinese.
I said to myself "WTF? Was he speaking Chinese? I don't see a bunch of Chinese people in there...No...that wasn't Chinese."
Then when he and Zoe are about to get into a fight, he does it again and I knew.
Damn. It's a sci-fi show, that's got a frontier feel, and they're speaking Chinese. Which means that something happened and the U.S. and the Chinese must have...Oh.My.Gawd. This is gonna be really interesting."
It was the realization that some really deep and interesting thinking had gone into this show, and that it was something that you were going to have to really WATCH instead of just sit there all brain dead and have it wash over you.
It's because though I like TV, and I can dig some Spongebob like anyone else, I like to be engaged in what I'm watching. I like my TV shows to make me have to watch and listen.
So, that's my story.

I had only had the opportunity to see one or two episodes when it ran on TV because of my schedule. I liked what I saw, but I didn't get HOOKED until I bought the DVD set and watched them IN ORDER as Joss intended.

The 'hook' came at the end of "Serenity".

"We're still flyin'"

"That's not much."

"It's enough."

That summed up so many things for me, and made me decide that I was in love with this show.

Probably when I found myself frantically trying to download Jaynestown after I missed it when it aired. I guess I realized I was definitely hooked then, but I really liked it from the start (of course.)

I knew it was going to be smart, funny, ironic and possibly scarier than hell.

I knew it was going to be well-written and excellently played. I knew it would be in all ways, "Mutant Enemy Excellent".

There was the train job. My husband heard me squeal as soon as the belly dancer appeared - and she actually knew how to dance.

Before the theme song played, I was hooked. Handsome captain, gorgeous mate, another gorgeous mate... punches thrown, jokes exchanged, chairs smashed ... ship coming up over the cliff ... finding out there were no guns.

I was hooked. "Mutant Enemy Excellent Indeed!"

Every moment after that, that hook became more deeply inbedded in my gullet. When Mal said that he had no choice but to return the medicine, I fell in love.

I'm a former aircraft mechanic and spent 10 years being very certain to stay a safe distance from the sucking hell of a jet engine intake. When Mal kicked the brute-squad right into it, I fell in love all over again.

Firefly is simply one of the finest shows I've seen in all my born days.

My comment upon finishing "Train Job" was "eh, good enough to catch a few more eps."

After "Bushwacked", I felt it had real potential.

I missed OMR the first time around.

I liked "Jaynestown", a lot.

I missed "Out of Gas".

I thought "Shindig" and "Safe" were decent enough, with some good moments.

However, I didn't realize I was utterly and irrevocably hooked until one particular scene....."You turn on any of my crew, YOU TURN ON ME!"

The first time I saw Firefly, was when it aired; I was playing games on the computer and only half paying attention, when it got to the part where it goes,

MAL:Now this is all the money Niska gave us in advance. You bring it back to him let him know the job didn't work out. We're not thieves...well, we are theives, the point is we're not taking what's his. Now we'll stay out of his way best we can here on in. You explain that's best for everyone. Okay?

CROW:Keep the money, use it to buy a funeral. It doesnt matter where you go, or how far you fly; I will hunt you down. The last thing you see will be my blade.

In my head I thought: "let me guess, he takes the money back to Niska, but Niska goes after them anyway. The series boils down to them running, Niska chasing after them each episode. Just another predictable Sci-Fi show."
At this point Mal says "Darn" and boots Crow into the engines, turns to the other guy: "Now this is all the money...."
At this point I was like: "WTF just happened? That was awesome!"
That made me realize that this was not your average sci-fi...never missed an episodes afterwards.

Between Queen of Wands, Final Fantasy X2, and the "monkeys" line from Firefly....

I got my girl a large, green stuffed monkey - her very own "terrifying space monkey", he has his own chair at her workplace.

Irony is that it's also (by chinese calender) the year of the Green Wood Monkey, ain't that wack?

I think I was hooked after the first episode I saw. (I think it was Shindig. Whichever one aired 2nd.) I didn't realize it, but I went to the Fox site, and was really ticked off when my sister brought her boyfriend over to see a video and I couldn't see or tape OMR. I didn't realize that I needed to tape and treasure every single episode until after OiS. And then after Serenity I was like, "Wow, this is the greatest thing in the history of the human race."

I fell in love with Firefly when "The Train Job" aired. It was so unusual and quirky, I was immediately in love with the show. It took maybe another episode for the wife to also fall in love with the show.

I still get a bit of a lump when I hear the opening guitar start the theme song. Like they said during the "Making Of..." featurette on DVD #4, the song is Malcolm Reynolds. Listening to that song and watching all the subsequent episodes, I realized that Mal was not only a guy I could relate to, but a guy I would love to invite into my home for an hour each week. Him and his eight other friends

Also, I love "Jaynestown". I still hear "The Hero of Canton" run through my head now and again (It keeps all the voices happy )

Needless to say, I'm glad I got the DVD set, so I can not only revisit all the episodes that got shown out of order, but see the unaired ones, too.

I find it really interesting that the writtenp-in-a-weekend, subpar-to-the-real-thing premiere is what hooked so many people.

Long live the genuis of Joss and Tim.

For me.. I'd seen Serenity, thanks to a great boss who taped it (I didn't start watching til last May), and I expected it to be great. It was. I don't think I knew I was going to be obsessed, though, until I found myself unable to space the 4 downloaded episodes I had (I had no DSL, so I knew it'd be a month or so til I could get more) and instead shot through 'Safe' in two days (that's how long I lasted).

I think, honestly, Bushwacked did it for me. I love the creepy beyond words, and I also was starting to really absolutely adore the characters. I had no moment of ephiphany - but by the end of Safe, I was distraught that I had to wait another month to download the rest.

When I saw the Train Job when it originally aired. A bunch of parts hooked me. The first being the barfight, and it just continued on from there. Plus when Simon asks Kaylee what they are up to and she replies with complete innocence "Oh, crime."

I think the special hell line in OMR was the one that really got me Id only seen train job before and while that definately got me interested I think it was that line that really made me realise how great this show was gonna be.

I only saw four episodes originally. I kept thinking I could make the others up on Re-Runs (little did I know...)

What got me hooked?

No sounds in space. (Whoa... its got no sound!)

Chinese. (My friend Janet told me what they were saying...)

River. (Why the hell doesn't anyone listen to her?!?)

I tuned in because I thought, hey, I love Buffy, big Joss fan, lets see what this is gonna be- So I watched TTJ, and when that opening sequence hits, and Serenity zooms over those horses, that was just about it- I was then further sold when they first cruise over the hovertrain- And I was thinking, 'I'm seeing the wild west of the future, and it rocks!' -
What further sold me: No technobabble - Even as a ST fan and a Bab5 fan, I really, really hate technobabble- Kaylee summed it up for me in OOG: 'Sometimes a thing's broke, can't be fixed'- Never looked back- FF was then officially "THE SHOW" -

I didn't realize I was hooked until long after the fact.

Let me explain: I live in Canada, so didn't see it until after it had been cancelled by the bone-heads at Fox. In fact, I had no idea it had been cancelled. I saw an ad for it on the SciFi channel, and since I love all forms of SciFi, I thought I'd give it a try.

So, I watched an episode (I don't remember which one) and thought it had potential. And I watched more. And soon, I discovered, much to my surprise and astonishment, that I was not taping it to watch at a convenient time, but sitting myself down in front of the tv with eager anticipation every week.

Now, here's the kicker...

I knew I was hooked at the end of Heart of Gold (they showed the three unaired shows as part of the series) when Inara told Mal she was leaving. I remember turning to my husband with wide eyes and saying "OMG!! What do you think will happen next?"

AND THEN I DISCOVERED THAT THEY'D CANCELLED THE DAMN SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me too. I was hooked when I knew this wouldn't be a "everyone lives happily ever after" show. Made Mal my favorite character. It solidified Mal as a person, and included his backround into it. In TV today, the good guy/bad guy never does anything really bad. Mal is who he is, in every episode.

First thing I saw (downloaded) was 'Object in Space'. From the first shot of marble-like planet and the accompanying music, I knew this show is going to be special. What sealed it for me was when River bends down to pick up the tree branch/pistol from forest/cargo bay floor, then the end with the marble-like planet, the accompanying music.

I had to see more, so living down here in Oz, I spent the next month scrambling like mad to download the rest, and making VCDs for friends.
Eventually got hold of the 'homemade' set.

Finally got the 'Official' DVDs. No lending, so far. Can't bear parting with it, for I watch an episode most night. I encourage them to buy instead.

I wasn't aware I was hooked until the end of Train Job when Mal kicked Crow through the engine & I nearly fell off my couch laughing.

When I first started watching "Train Job" and the opening bar scene where Mal gets the purple belly's attention so Zoe can work her way up behind him and hit him, I couldn't tear myself away from the tv. I sat glued to the set for that hour, even weathering commercials so I did not miss a minute.

I am a Joss fan and wanted to give Firefly a chance but my woman would have never forgiven me if we did not go out on a Friday night, and so I never had a chance to watch it.

So, now it was a Sunday afternoon and my football team was getting blown out and I am channel surfing. Firefly was just starting; on a Sunday? I guess the Friday episode of "OMR" was preempted for what I don't know. And this episode is hi-larious, but the clincher is when Saffron is all naked and articulate and Captain Mal says: "Oh, I'm going to the special Hell!" and then passes out, I was all kinds of hooked from that point forward.

Confession:

When I saw the premiere ("Train Job") I didn't really care for it. The introductions seemed forced and rushed. I wasn't impressed until they put the guy through the engine.

However, one good point wasn't enough to hook me and I didn't watch another episode until "Out of Gas" which I really liked. However, it takes me awhile to develop a habit and I didn't see another episode before it was cancelled.

I received the DVD boxed set for Christmas and was officially hooked by the half-way mark of "Serenity". By the end of "Our Mrs. Reynolds" I was obsessed.

But I was reminded again when I got the DVD's with this delivery from "Serenity":

Kaylee's dead.

He is steely, contained. Simon is shocked, quietly devastated.

Mal turns and walks toward the bridge. A moment, and Simon starts in a daze for the infirmary, running, unable to accept it as he enters:

Lets see... I did manage to catch a few of the episodes on Fox. Didn't really pay much attention, just enough to think "hey, cool show."

Then, after star trek had been going down hill... I found out that Space had started airing Firefly on mondays at 9pm (I have sent them an email thanking them for this ;) ), so i thought "Hmm... sci-fi replacement?

And so I watched it on my big blue bean bag chair in front of my big ol tv screen. No distractions. Pure firefly.

And it was the best tv watching EVER. No see through plot, no predictable adventure, just the best tv show ever made. I watched every monday (and still do, even though I have the dvd's). I still watch an episode a day just because I love it so damn much.

As the show has not yet been on air over here in germany, I've seen it first on DVD (and in the right order starting with the pilot for that matter ).
I was curious about this new Joss Whedon show because I like his other work, especially BTVS.
I liked the pilot and thought that it was a pretty good show, but I got really hooked the time I reached OMR, which is still my fav episode.
I think it was that scene with Mal and Saffron in Mal's living room...
When I finished watching all DVDs I started right back at the beginning, something that has never happened to me before with any movie or tv series, and I knew that this was very special. Since then, I'm addicted to Firefly

I was a Firefly fan from the first commercial I saw for it.

Usually in our house, one of the kids (kids, now 21 and 22 and bigger than me) gets interested in a show, and infects us all with the fandom. I avoided Buffy, thought the concept was, well, not for me, till daughter made me sit through a couple episodes. She did the same to us for ER as well.

[And then when we got real into Buffy, she kinda backed away. Weird}

Anyway, I see this commercial for a science fiction show. That pings my sonar. Find out its also a western, okay, that sounds interesting. And then it was by Joss, and that was it, I was sold before Train Job.

And I still feel like it is my show. I am the one that got the rest of the family to watch it, got them interested.

But I also seem to have bad luck. Any time I like a show, it gets cancelled way too early. So, for that, I am sorry folks.

This is the first time I've posted here! I just discovered Firefly last weekend while at a friend's house. I'm not sure how I lived before I watched a few episodes, thought it was pretty good, and then I came home, downloaded the pilot, and that was it. I'm forcing myself not to watch any more episodes until my DVD arrives, and it is torture. I've told all my friends about it, and they know I'm obsessed.
I was delighted to find this site! It's very cool to hear from so many other fans!

Sorry to add more. I just wanted to say that my favorite scene so far is the one in the second half of the pilot between Kaylee and Mal when Kaylee is just waking up after being shot. That was the moment I was truly and irreversibly hooked on this AWESOME show.

I watched "the train job" with baited breath but was disapointed at first but it was good enopugh to make me want to watch some other episodes but i didn't for a couple of weeks it was jaynestown that i saw after train job and i fell in love, i still love that episode even after i';ve seen it 30+ times (most of them in poor quality cus of fox's crappy transmitters) i watched train job agai nthe other ay on DVD and loved it it made so much more sense to me now i knew the background stories to the charecters. now i watch the entire series about once a week, more if freinds come over who havn't seen it.

Oh i was eagerly anticipating this ever since i heard that Joss was working on it. But i have to say i wasn't "hooked" untill i heard the Theme Song (gorramn song has gotten stuck in my head more times than i can count).

I don't believe there's a power in the verse that can stop Kaylee from being cheerful.

But I didn't get really hooked until a friend of mine brought over the DVD set and we watched Serenity and The Train Job. Yep, I was hooked. I bought my copy the next day. I've since purchased a second set of the DVD's to lend out to other friends so they will get hooked as well

Within 5-10 minutes of seeing the last segment of the episode I now know was BUSHWACKED(when it origially aired). I had heard a reference or two to a new scifi series airing on FOX but just stumbled across it when taking a break at work. Was not surprised at all to see the show cancelled since it was 'most excellent'. You may have heard the sonic boom I created when getting down to the local BEST BUY the day the DVD set was released.

I was in with the first ad I saw on Fox. Never have I seen an ad that caught my attention the way that one did. I think it was the combination of a Western-Sci Fi that included a whore and a girl-in-a-box.

Of course, it just got better from there. ;)

That is exactly what I thought.... and exactly when I knew. Gorramit, I love this show so much. I want it back so much. Please let it come back. Please. Isn't there anything I can do? Isn't there any for sure positive solution?

I started watching the show from the beginning, but I wasn't hooked on it. I actually missed one of the episodes, and it didn't bother me that much. It was one of those shows that I watched, but didn't really pay much attention to. I would be doing other things while it was on, only half-way paying attention.

But then I saw "Safe", and I was obsessed ever after. It was the part where River is dancing. She was just so graceful and happy and free. It was a beautiful scene, and River became my favorite character. I wanted to find out what the alliance had done to her, I wanted to know what she was capable of, and I wanted to see her get better.

Then I really started to pay attention to the rest of the show, and I realized how friggin' great it was. Far better than anything else on tv. So, of course, Fox goes and cancels it. They really can't seem to deal with quality programming on that network. But it will return, I know it. The movie will be an amazing success, and then they'll bring back the show. Oh yes, it will happen. Just think happy thoughts.

i loved the show from the start, but i guess i knew i was hooked when i jumped off my chair shouting "LOOK! LOOK! theres serenity!"when she flys overhead in battlestar galactica. which i then proceeded to rewind and watch several times, much to the disgust of my other half

The idea that there weren't any particular *rules* to the show. When Mal kicks the moron into the intake I almost fell out of my seat. Actually I stood up in my living room and said "holy Sh*t"!

Mal isn't bad, and he isn't good either, but he IS loyal. It was so... human to me, and the poke at the large, squeaky clean massive government is a well taken one. Screw the Federation, er, Alliance.

Any show that elicits such surprise and fine fits of wonder did it for me. I do not watch television. My TV is for movies only that arrive in DVD form. If this show were to become syndicated again, I would pay money for cable so I could watch it. Period.

Well, unlike most of you, the first show I saw was the pilot.

I've tried to imagine what my impression might have been if the first ep I saw was "Train Job", and my sense is that I wouldn't have been as immediately hooked, not because Train Job isn't good, but because the pilot is just a better intro to the show. In fact, I think it would have messed up my overall impression of the series, because not knowing about the doctor and River and such would have made a lot of things in the series just weird and inexplicable.

Anyway though, the friend who introduced me to the show (via the DVD set) didn't have time to show me the whole series, but he showed me the pilot, Jaynestown and Ariel, and by then I was totally, totally hooked.

But the actual *moment* that I knew I was hooked was in the pilot - right after the opening scene of the battle for Serenity Valley - when the Firefly logo burned through the screen, and the opening theme song played. Seeing the rest of the episode then just confirmed what I already knew. :)
