Setting for RPG?

Here’s a question to the role players etc.
Time wise – what’s the most common era for RPG (of any sort)? Post BDM. Pre-BDM, when? Does Wash go flying on – or, not. Are any up to what you might call current time – three years or so on from the BDM with the characters reflecting the age (and aging) of the actors? In the fan-fic universe, we got grown up kidlings and all sorts going on, Mal might even be a grandpa by now).
Who, how and what are the deciding factors in setting the place and time for a roleplay? Are some places (e.g. Persephone, Londinium) more popular than others (Lilac, Beaumonde, Mr Universe’s Moon say)?
I’m interested to know – and see how much the planning process is similar (or not) to penning a fic. Why so nosey? Ah well, I want to try out some new scribbling methods is all…
