As a Browncoat duct tape enthusiast with a competitive streak and need for scholarship money, I decided to enter the “Stuck at Prom” contest sponsored by the company that makes Duck Tape. In this contest, high school students from all over the country create prom outfits using duct tape. Ten finalists are selected from all of the entries, and online voting determines the winner. To demonstrate my devotion to Firefly, I created my duct tape ensemble inspired by Mal’s tux and Kaylee’s dress from Shindig. These outfits made it into the top ten.

I used over 20 rolls of duct tape, and had to overcome laws of physics (all those ruffles are heavy!) as well as wear the outfit in Phoenix summer temperatures exceeding 107 degrees.

Here is where I am looking for the support of my fellow Browncoats. The winner of the contest is determined by online voting. Simply, the prom outfit with the most votes wins. Well, I'm gonna vote for the chap as much as possible and I'm trying to get some non-Browncoats to vote too, but without a big showing from the Browncoats, I think our Shindig couple is humped. The data will be clearer in another day or two, but it appears our candidate is getting maybe 200 votes/day. The current leaders seem to be getting 2,500+ votes/day. Based on some googling I think the leaders are from Chicago and therefore possibly from a big 4,000+ student high school. Considering the TV_Vote things only draws 1,000 votes/day and you can vote a dozen times/day there things look grim. Our comrade needs a massive mobilization of Browncoats for the next two weeks.

Perhaps you could post a YouTube video to help promote yourself?

I think this contest is a good test for Browncoats. It's a good cause - college money for at least one Browncoat, maybe two and promotes the 'Verse - that should be good motivation. It is a short duration, so it doesn't take a lot of time (heck 15 seconds a day for two weeks for one vote) - so it doesn't cost much. Yet the results are lack luster at best. Yes, we moved him from 7th to 5th which probably wouldn't have happened without our support and I'm proud about that, but gorram it if this is the best we can do then maybe the studios are right.

I must extend my deepest gratitude to all the Browncoats who helped move me from 7th to 5th. And I would like to personally thank Vexem, for you have shown more devotion than I thought I could receive.

However, i must bid you all an unfortunate farewell for the time being. I am going camping, and will be out of touch with the technological world for about a week. I will return home the 29th in time to vote one last time.
