" A 70-year-old Iranian man was arrested and sentenced to four months in jail and 30 lashes for walking his dog, Adnkronos.com reported Tuesday. Police caught the man on the street with his dog in Shahr Rey, a suburb of Tehran.

Owners of domestic animals are forbidden from taking them on the streets of the city because Islam considers dogs to be impure. An Islamic judge later charged the man for "disturbing the public order,” Adnkronos.com reported.

Despite repeated warnings by the police, dog owners continue to defy authorities by taking their dogs outside their homes. Typical punishment for people caught with dogs outside is a fine or the "detention" of their animals in a pound, Adnkronos.com reported."

Islam considers dogs impure???.....
30 lashes on a 70-year old man?...
And this is the country that Russia, China, France et al love & support? This is the country some in America want to sit down & discuss things with?

The Iranian government do many terrible things like that. There was an excellent BBC documentary about a 16 year old girl who was executed for "crimes against chastity" - in actual fact being raped. The judge submitted false documents to the Supreme Court that declared her to be 22 and put the noose around her neck personally.

I was watching Sweeney Todd the other night and Alan Rickman's judge had a comic scene, sentencing a small child to death. Horrific to think that people like that are still in power in this world.

Yeah, what barbarians, here we just taser em a bit, maybe without that reactor online they can't get the things to keep a charge, eh ?

For an unkempt yard.

Let's not pretend were above this conduct, but I do submit that we are SUPPOSED to be.

Regardless of the fact that they are universally ignored, we at least make the pretense of not officially (well, not publicly...) sanctioning this kind of behavior.

So while you call em barbaric, and I'll not disagree, don't let your actions in response remove those protections HERE and reduce us to the same level.

And remember, let's call a spade a spade, the government we're proppin up in Iraq is more of the same - I want these theocrat nincompoops gone as much as anyone else, but we can't do it while running all the locals to the "devil they know" cause we're as bad or worse.

How they run their country is their business, but for the love of mercy why the hell should we reduce ourselves to that kind of barbarism to fight them, via destroying all the rights and protections within our law that supposedly make us any better.

I mean hell, that's like burning the castle down to defend it from the enemy, innit ?

I just don't understand why any so-called civilized country can support and do business with these people. This is worse to me than Michael Vick. I can't imagine a 70 year old man, someone's grandpa, getting 30 lashes...he probably won't live past 10. Amazing cruelty & barbarity on display for all the world to see. Maybe Sean Penn will fly over and do a photo-shoot of the event. This is the world the Islamists want for all of us, or at least for those that they don't kill immediately. This is their dream...a Taliban/Nazi sick medieval world of brutal control, slavery and death. And some also say all this "terror" stuff is a bumper sticker, or fear-mongering...or the politics of fear. Well every single day I see what they do, and I do believe it's damn real.

I'd be willing to bet there are some 70 year-olds waiting to die our prisons for non-violent drug offenses. The point some of us are trying to make is, we wish you people who wanna get all worked up about injustices half a world away would help up us clean up our own backyard. I care a helluva lot more about people suffering in this country than I do about Iranians - people I don't know, don't share a common culture with, and frankly don't understand.

Yup, that's exactly what it is. They wanna scare us, or make us mad, or righteously indignant, or whatever so we'll go over there and die to protect their access middle-east to oil. Fuck that. No culture as backasswards as the one they Islamic fundamentalists want to create will ever be a serious threat to our nation. Let them create whatever kind of screwed up theocracy they want.

I just did an internet search on this story, and found only Adnkronos.com, Fox news quoting Adnkronos.com, and a host of internet blogs....

Is it possible that Adnkronos.com is the Italian version of Pirate News?

The Alliance said they were gonna waltz through Serenity Valley. And we choked 'em with those words. We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.

Gotta feel sorry for all those Iranian dogs, though. Just waiting by the door, all cross-legged....

Certainly this is messed up. But in my opinion, one of the things we do wrong is then go and back up an equally barbaric rebel who is trying to grab power away from the sitting theocracy. Then the locals start to equate US intervention with "making things worse". It seems to me that, left alone for a bit, the people under this kind of oppression would rise up on their own eventually.

Actually I kinda hope it is, and no apology necessary... like anytime I hear bad news I hope someone has gotten the message wrong.
