Browncoats,

I've been toying with the idea of writing my Serenity tabletop RPG that I play with my wife and good friend into story format and posting it for ya'll in Blue Sun. Here is my dilemma...

We made characters for the game after I had seen the BDM, but before I had seen any of Firefly. The characters my players most wanted to explore were River and the Operative, so the characters they made are similar types. (Not ACTUALLY River and the Operative, since I always make my gamers make up their own characters, even if they are inspired by others.) I didn't have enough people to put together the crew of a ship, so since that theme wasn't an option, I thought this aspect would be O.K.

Cynthia is a girl who was partially through the Alliance experimentation regimen before being rescued by Michael, an Alliance watchdog at some sub-Operative level of achievement who had been assigned to watch part of the facility and had a pang of conscience. Now, naturally enough, they're on the run.

Since seeing Firefly, though, I feel this plot may miss the boat entirely of the overall theme and feel of what the series is supposed to be. I've also been confronted with just how implausible my story is within the 'Verse (though Cynthia, being not a star pupil like River, was probably not in a position to learn the kind of secrets that made River so dangerous to the Alliance, so maybe they aren't trying quite as hard to find her). I assume it is O.K. to go away from the established themes, but I'm not sure how far I'm straying (or will stray in the future, since an RPG-based story is a shared storytelling experience) and if it would be good.

Also, from a technical standpoint, not being an author of fan fiction in the past, I don't know if it is supposed to have actual canonical characters in it to qualify as a fanfic. In my case, I'm trying to use my own characters and locations almost completely so that my imagination doesn't risk running counter to anything canon. (One bittersweet benefit of a short run series for us creative types is that with only a few worlds shown in the show, we have a lot of room left in the 'Verse to play in on our own.)

So, what does everybody think? I don't want to put the time into it if it would oppose the notion of Firefly in any way, or if the Browncoats in general just wouldn't be interested. If there's interest, though, I will do my best to create something worth reading.

Thanks all for your opinions.

play with the 'verse - be its God!

no, seriously - go with that you've seen - what you've already worked on and what you WANT to do - we don't ALL bite.

2 things:
one - minor warning - the facility idea is a little close to the series Dark Angel (but what the hell - go for a cross over if u like - what does it matter?)
and anyway
two - if you know the Buffyverse at all - i was always intrigued by the 'what if' idea that after Buffy rejected them the Watchers tried to created their own kind of Slayer (non mystical but bred and trained - a bit like Justine in Angel) but i never got round to doing anything about it - your facility could explore similar themes - the not quite hero - the hero in the shadow of the hero etc

don't let no/one muffle your signal!
