I read a lot of fanfiction on this site and others, but I haven't seemed to be able to find very many good ones lately. Anyone have any recommendations?
Also, shipwise, I'm getting really bored with the more common pairings, like Mal/Inara, Zoe/Wash, Simon/Kaylee, Jayne/Kaylee, Jayne/River, and Mal/River.
So now, I'm starting to get into the less common pairings like Mal/Kaylee, Jayne/Zoe, and Zoe/Mal. Do any of you know of any good fics that fit those criteria?
Please help! I'm getting desperate here!

I know what's right, and it is time,
It's time to fight, and free our minds!

To bend like steel forged over fire.
We were not made to bend like reed,
Or to turn the other cheek!"

With regard to those pairings, well... I got nothing. Although pairings are not the reason I read fics. A good engrossing story with dead-on Firefly dialogue and some believable action is what grabs me. But, to each his and her own, I say.
Here are some good rec's though. (In no particular order, so no offense anyone) Some are works in progress, so patience is required...
"Down the Rabbit Hole" by Homespun
"Tranquility" by Captainvimes
"Backstories" by Mal4Prez
"Hostages to Fortune" through "Rock and a Hard Place" by Slumming
"The Losing Side" by Jetflair
And if you want to read an attempt at a screenplay, I wrote a little ditty called "A Mighty Thorn In a Mighty Paw."
"Phoenix Feathers" by MirandaGhost
Now, there's other excellent stuff out there, but my time is limited. I don't want anyone to feel ignored or forgotten, so please, don't take offense.

They're not really the reason I read 'em either, but when the fic is well written, they definitely add to the story overall.

Thanks for the help, HeWhoKicksAlot. I'll check those out.

"What I Want, What I Need" by MercenarySong is a good Jayne/Zoe story, but it updates rather infrequently. I remember reading a ficlet called "Hold Me" that was Mal/Kaylee, but no long-term fics. Then there's a cute River/Kaylee story that I believe is called "Adam's Rib" and actually works surprisingly well. I know you didn't mention that pairing, but you must admit it's unusual. That's all I can think of. The only story I ever read that had any Mal/Zoe tones was a wartime rape scenario, and that's just icky. All others keep it strictly friendship as far as I've found. Really, I think that's how it should be, but I suppose in the right circumstances it could blossom into something else.
You know what might be interesting? Zoe/Simon. There's a pair not many think of going together.![]()
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

*Shameless self promotion alert.*
I've written some Firefly horror stories.
Primarily, the 'Schism' series is River centric, and deals with a disturbance on Serenity. The story switches perpectives between a few other crew members too. It is fun, action packed, mysterious, spooky, and not too graphic.
There are five chapters in this series. The first four chapters are really short, (totalling to six pages in all), yet they are packed with cryptic details that allude to much longer future instalments. The fifth chapter in this series is thirteen pages long, and is my favourite.
'Resurgence' is a spin off, dealing with the aftermath of events in the Schism series. It is much darker in tone though. Each chapter is five pages long.
Here's a link to my fan fic: http://www.fireflyfans.net/showblog.asp?b=5116

That's true. I know I've read a Zoe/Simon one-shot fic somewhere, and it was pretty good.
CosmicFugitive, thanks for the reference. I'll check your story out. BTW, (beginning of MY shameless self promotion
) I'm working on a new fic (nothing posted yet, and it won't be 'til I finish at least ten chapters). I'm still kinda struggling with the title (which is strangely enough, one of the hardest parts of writing for me), 'cause I keep revising my outline, so the titles that I've come up with no longer fit the story very well.Anyway, it is a Mal-centric AU, where Zoe dies in Serenity Valley. Mal, without Zoe to anchor him and balance his dark side out, ends up living a very different, and much darker life. But don't worry, it'll have a happy resolution in the end (at least my current outline says it will). So, keep an eye out, 'cause I'm probably going to start posting in the next couple of weeks (end of MY shameless self promotion).

Here a few fics I can think of:
Reliance, by Roseveare
One of the first fanfics I read, and still one of the best. Nothing as far a pairings go, but excellently written.

River's Dinner Countdown, by Tonyahuqt03
Once again, no pairings, but it feels like you are reading the script for an episode.

That Old Yeh Shen Story, by Tara O'Shea
I actually haven't finished this story. I include it here because it has the absolute funniest line I've ever read in a fanfic. It's one of the tradtional pairings (S/K), but is well written.

If I think of more, I'll make sure to post.
