In shindig, when Atherton Wing is flattering Inara at the ball, She says "I'm waiting for the boy with the shimmer wine."
I'm sooo curious what that means! Is it from a myth or other story? Where does it come from? Does anybody know? I can't find mention of it anywhere!
Thanks!

To my knowledge the conversation *actually* goes like this:
Atherton: Half the men in this room wish they were on your arm tonight.
Inara: Only half? I must be losing my indefinable allure.
But the subtitles gets it way, way wrong. I think anyway. I'm going by memory here.

I took "shimmerwine" to be a type of wine.
There are waiters wandering around with champagne / wine and whatnot throughout the ball, and after the whole exchange, a waiter finally passes Atherton and he grabs glasses for Inara and himself.

I just read the script out of the Firefly companion and Innara uses the line to change the subject after Atherton makes an offensive comment. A few lines later he grabs a glass of champagne for Innara.
BTW- At the end of the episode, Mal and Innara a sharing homemade wine in the cargo bay.
Thank Universal for airing Firefly in HD at

I googled shimmerwine thinking it my be from some classic liturature and I got Firefly. Well that is classic.
I am beginning to realise that as the years go by writers will quote from Firefly just like they do other quality works.

Inara turns away from Atherton and says "I'm looking for the boy with the shimmerwine" (champagne) when he says that only half the men in the room wish she was on their arm, but all of them wish she was in their bed. It offended her a bit to be told that most of her worth was between her legs and she needed to change the subject and get her bearings in order to be once again the gracious Companion. He started to tease her sarcastically with "Ooh, she blushes" but then possibly realized his error and spun it around into a compliment. But this was a prelude to us learning that he truly viewed her as both his property and a whore.
Personally, I thought his little compliment was rather weak and she shouldn't have been taken in by it, but she was, as I said, being gracious.

I believe personally all women are evil and need to be spanked. Sometimes I pull their hair to bring the witch out just before I gratify myself. Look Inara never cooks not a true companion ok the least she could have done was give captain Kirk some nookie. I mean sweet baby geezus the man got knifed in the gut, hell that's gutsy. You know if a woman don't see that worth sleepin with I would drop miss hoity toity off at the nearest truck stop. I mean Mandy was all over Kirk's bones, made sure he wasn't sly, showed him her guns, and then put the saki on him. Mandy would be movin baby. And if you notice at Mandy's place there is a kitchen, bedroom and game room. Just sayin this is a real woman who likes men.
I like smacken em.

PirateCat, there are so many things wrong with your post I don't even have the time or energy to list them. Thank you for contributing nothing at all, it really means very little to all of us here.
