Renouncing My Ways: The Angelic Version

So in addition to my Buffy-repentance, I've now started worshipping at the feet of Angel (did that sound as bad as I think it did? 
).
The first season has been great so far, though you can tell it's still finding it's footing. Though I hate to say it, Angel has really moved out from under Buffy's shadow. He's allowed to become his own person, whereas before, he was only defined by his realtionship to Buffy. This will have positive consequences, I think.
I'm liking Doyle so far. He's good as a wingman. But my favorite has to be Cordelia. I was never a big fan when she was on Buffy, but now you get to see her as an adult, not just a stuck-up teen. She really has started to understand what the real world is like. And having to meditate to stave off the effects of hunger must have really put things in perspective for her. 
My absolute favorite part is as usual, Spike.

And probably some of Cordy's best moments ever were in the Angel pilot:
"But you're not... evil? I mean, you're not here to, you know, bite people?"
"...with no mirrors, and lots of curtains, and hey, you're a vampire!"
"You don't know who he is, do you? Oh boy, you're about to get your ass kicked."

Doyle was an ok character. I think Wesley was a better sidekick for Angel, though.
I got the same impression from the first season as you did when I first saw it. The second season starts to pick it up alittle. I think it was the third season or the last half of the third season that the show started to become a great show to watch. All the seasons starting from the 3rd season are my favotites. The 5th season being my most favorite, except for the series finaly, I thought was too rushed and could have been better if it was a 2 hour show instead of just one hour.

I've seen Angel through 2x's now, and have SE 2 and 5 on disc. Always awesome stuff. Going back and re-learning Buffy as I'm doing now ( and you've done ) makes the stories soooo much more interesting and exciting! LOTS of connections between Buffy/Angel which I was ignorant about, have started coming to light. Sometimes vague comments can refer to something irrelevent, or major plot situations from the past. Unless you know the context, you're mostly lost. Watching Buffy has clued me into stuff like that, and it's so damn fun! People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

It's not fair, gorramit. I liked Doyle. Joss could have done a ton more with his character. And I'm sorry to all the Wesley-lovers out there, but he's a poor substitute in my opinion. Though he does make a better Robin to Angel's Batman. Doyle was more Nightwing-ish.
On a lighter note, I liked "Bachelor Party". Dobson (Carlos Jacott) is really good at playing the whole guy-next-door thing. Well, at least the guy-next-door-planning-to-kill-you.
"Sense And Sensitivity" was just plain scary. I mean, Angel being considerate? That has to be against some law. Unless it has to do with Buffy.
There are some days when I actually like Angel better than Buffy. Maybe not like better, but it is nice to have a break from Sunnydale. On Angel the characters are adults dealing with adult problems. Like it or not, the Scoobies are still kids. It's nice to have a fresh breath of maturity every now and then.

Joss claims to have killed off Doyle because he always wanted to have a credited cast member die off a few eps into a show (he wanted to do that with Jesse and put the actor into the credits for the pilot but wasn't allowed). But I really think something happened with Glenn Quinn. The episode "Hero" was obviously rushed (demon Nazis, really?) and some of the script was extracted from an episode that the WB wouldn't allow them to make for 1.2 because it was "too dark" (little did they know...) Glenn died of a drug overdose a few years later, so I always wondered.... and there were a few little rumblings at the time too. Maybe the plan was always to kill off Doyle in the first season, but I don't think it was supposed to be at that moment.
Oh, and this is another little trivial bit. Whistler (from 'Becoming') was supposed to be in the cast but the actor wasn't available to shoot the pilot (jail or something like that) so Joss had to come up with a Whistler-ish character and there came Doyle. There used to be a first draft of the pilot script online that had Whistler in it. The lines didn't change that much; Joss just took out the stuff where Angel and Whistler talked about meeting before.
