Anime Question

This is kind of random, but for those of you that watch anime, have you noticed any similarities between certain shows and Firefly? Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star are obvious choices, but I noticed some other as well. For instance, in Full Metal Alchemist, there is a character named Winry who is a cheerful mechanic. And though this isn't Firefly related, in Hellsing there is a character kind of like Caleb from Buffy. Maybe Joss is an otaku?

One of my most favorite thing to do is to look at media and find the common ground. I would like to think that Firefly is set in my mind middle ages. LOTR is set on earth before it cleansed itself, before what we think of as the Earths life span. There are so many stories being told and waiting to be told that the possbilities are endless. As for the chance of Joss being otaku. Maybe.
