Newcomer Morena Baccarin has been cast in Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon's upcoming SF TV show Firefly for Fox, taking the role recently vacated by Rebecca Gayheart, Variety reported. Baccarin, a recent graduate of Juilliard, makes her TV debut in the part.

Something funny here. Rebecca went on to do a show called "dead like me". And on the season finale of it, our own Jewel Staite did a guest apperance on it. Just one episode mind you, but funny how life does that.

The other thing funny here is that Gayheart did the first three or four eps of DLM and was kinda replaced by Laura Harris. That came after being replaced on the FF pilot (original).

During 2001 Ms Gayheart had an automobile accident and killed a nine year old child. The boy was jaywalking. Other cars had stopped to let him cross, Ms Gayheart over took the stopped cars and struck the child. She pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter and received a years driving suspension, 750 hours community service and a fine. She was then sued by the boys parents, with an out of court settlement occurring in 2002.

This all occurred shortly before she began filming Firefly. It is unlikely she would have been at her acting best and Fox may have decided there was too much bad publicity related to her.
