Fanfic HTML question

I've only posted one fic here, and it was pretty simple. Now I've got one that has some italics in it. Do I need to use HTML code to get it to do that the same as we do for messages?

From what I understand about HTML, if you want it to show up in italics once you've posted it, you have to code it that way. In other words, the fanfic works just like our messages.

You can save-as your fanfic document and add the html in layout, so you don't have to do it on the fly in the browser.

Anyone else know different?
