1. Exactly what are they and when were they made and by whom and for what purpose? Are they "official"?

2. How many are there? I found a link that had 5 mini-movies, essentially. Is that the complete set of River Tam Sessions?

Thanks!

SIMON: That's not much.
MAL: It's enough.

Joss and Summer filmed it in a garage in one afternoon. They did it just to give us something to watch while we waited on for the movie to come out.

That should be all of them. I didn't hear anything about there being anymore than 5 or so..

From the thread, Flanvention Report - Followups and Answers
One more little item that came up in the Q&A sessions: Summer was asked about doing the River Tam Sessions. It's a pretty good story. One day she gets a call from Joss, who asks, what are you doing tomorrow? Can you get down here real quick and shoot these scenes? Turns out Joss had sold someone at Universal on doing the viral marketing thing, and had scheduled studio time -- but hadn't written them yet!

Summer said it was really a blast making them. She'd been worried she wouldn't have time to get herself in character (she likes a lot of prep time, especially for the big emotional scenes like the ones with Simon in the BDM) but it turned out fine. She said how nice it was to be able to portray the "sane" River, the happy and enthusiastic girl she was before they broke her.

I asked a followup question: would the sessions ever be available in better resolution versions? The online vids are pretty grainy... Summer answered simply, "I think that's part of their charm."

I also remembered watching an interview asking about the sessions too, but I can't rememeber where they are from the top of my head.

They were a viral marketing concept floated by Joss in preparation for the release of the BDM. As such, they're not "official" (they're viral marketing), but they are official in the capacity that they are from The Man, and that they do contain Joss, as well as Summer Glau in her official role as River =)

I think that's about all there is. Session 416 is split into a part 1 and a part 2, but that's because the episodes begin and end there. That's important =p

Oh man, that is so true, she hit it right on the nose there. When I was watching them I got the impression they'd been lifted right out of some tapes made from a security camera. They're very cool regardless. Even if they aren't considered Canon they give us an idea of how the experiments slowly changed River.

I'm w/you, BrowncoatSandinista...
they are obviously totally canon,
if Joss writes, directs it, and stars in it...
then there can be no doubt!
