Ok so it seems to me after watching all the episodes that somebody is always hurt and needs a doctor.

What in the hell did they ever do before Simon came on board?

1. They were more careful.

2. Zoe learned first aid during the war.

3. Kaylee's good at keeping anything running.

4. There was another doctor who got off before the salvage job -- possibly on Persephone. Maybe he ran into Simon at the Eavesdown Docks and told him about the job opening.

5. Aw hell, I've made up enough answers for today.

All could be true but they would all be dead based on the wounds that some of them have. Especially Shepard.

(SPOILER ALERT) Also, Mal gets run through with a sword in the BDM.

Let's not forget, of course, that Firefly is set some 500 years in the future. Medical science has made huge leaps in just a single century of our own time - who's to say what advances will have been made by the time Serenity takes flight?

In War Stories, we see a "dermal mender" that seamlessly reattaches Mal's severed ear. In Ariel, Simon makes mention of any number of medicines, all of which could have remarkable medical properties. Just because Mal and his crew live 'rough' doesn't mean they don't have access to startlingly effective medicine.

Sorry to preach, but some people seem to be forgetting the 'science' in 'science-fiction'!
