He had abstained from it for so long. He didn’t know how much longer he could take her cheerfulness and her constant happy smiles.

He had resisted. Resisted that extra step, that extra touch to show her.

Temperance, he thought. It had been so long since anyone had made him feel, made him care, beyond himself and his sister.

It was harsh. There she was in front of him. Smiling. Being cheerful. Chatting to his sister with no qualms, no worries at all.

And there he was abstaining, resisting, waiting.

Maybe this was worth going off the wagon for.

Maybe.

I like it, too. It's tough to capture the essence of someone in so few words, but I think you do a very effective job of it, especially in regards to the feelings of frustration.
