Jayne has finished dying.

There's still heat coming off his body, melting the snowflakes that land on his face, but soon enough he will freeze up like meat in the ice box.

A lump of white on the open plain.

They'll find him in a few weeks. Or maybe never.

River tugs the blanket more tightly around her shoulders and studies the pattern of blood in the snow. A dark hole of wet frozen soil, soaked with red. The color is hard to make out in the twilight.

Dusky white clouds reflect off the white landscape in a grey blue. Falling flakes cover up all signs of struggle.

There's a hush over everything.

Much better than before.

Sweat has dried on her forehead, under the cap. Beige is not a good color for her, but the season demands practicality.

The season demands pragmatism.

"Do you know what your sin is?"

She drags the knife through the snow, leaves trails of red, then she wipes it off on Jayne's sleeve. There's a shiver of wild-frantic panic running up her arm at the contact. A swirl of last thoughts. His Ma.

"I couldn't find a frozen lake," she informs him and starts walking back to the ship.

On the way she drops the knife.

The cap stays behind in a trash can six minutes from Serenity.

Her eyes are big and desperate when she stumbles into Simon's arms. She even cries a little.

"He wasn't anywhere."

The hot skin at his throat has her burrowing closer.

"Mei mei, you can't just run away," he soothes. "I was so worried."

No need to be worried any longer. River doesn't say it, because the Captain is close.

"Gorram it, I told him to hurry up with the whores." He stomps his cold feet on the ground and she watches the lumpy bits of snow falling off, mixing with the dirt.

Diagnosis: Too much Sin City.

Very nice descriptions of the winter landscape. The whole piece has a very tangible feel, with the frozen ground, the hot skin of Simon's throat. Gonna have to read Inferno one of these days....

Well written but River killing Jayne like that and leaving him in the snow? Felt all kinds of wrong. Plus, I miss the big lug already. Ali D :~)

Very well written and dark. I love it, but I'd love for a hint as to WHY she did it. Or maybe there was one and I wasn't reading closely enough.

Thank you for your comments, everyone. :)

Rinny -

I thought the setting post-Ariel would give it away. :) I've also sprinkled some admittedly very vague hints referring to Dante's "Inferno" and the ninth circle of hell, where all the traitors suffer in a frozen lake.

But mostly the post-Ariel thing.

Hmm.. maybe I should emphasize that more...

(Tis Cathy)

I liked it! Very dark, and I admit I read the comments before hand so I knew why she killed him already.

(And it wasn't too Sin City. There the blood rained everywhere and got on everything for no reason.)

Very cool, and I love the references to "Inferno." (I'm obsessed with epic poems.)

I don't really see River being that spiteful, unless she was unaware of what she was doing. Maybe you could give a better idea of whether she was in her right mind or not?

Thanks for your comments, Cathy and cherrybomb. :)

Mostly this is an experimental AU, and I kind of liked the ambiguity of River's mental state. The creepiness hiding beneath the softer exterior, so I didn't want to look at her any more closely than I did.

Oh well. I'm glad you liked the references. :)

just started textual analysis in english, so i'm going around reading WAAAAAAAAAAY too much into stuff, seeing symbolism everywhere, you know the type of thing, so this was a real shiny treat for me to find...

well done - sad but creepy, I understand why you had River kill Jayne but he's still one of my favorite characters because he's so damn hilarious
