Disclamer: I do not own Firefly, for that belongs to my God Joss. And if I did it would not have been cancled.

Warning: Mal/River. If this offends, don't read it!

So wrong, it has to be right.

“They tell me I’ve gone mad,” the words fell from her crimson lips onto his ears like liquid honey. “They tell me I’ve gone insane.” She giggled to herself at the idea, the high innocent laugh of a schoolgirl. But, something about it was so sinister, so wrong, that it made the very hairs on the back of Captain Malcolm Reynolds’ neck stand on end.

Her large dark brown eyes stared up, completely ignoring the strands of her long, messy, dark hair that fell down before them. She surveyed him, stalked him, from her place perched atop the iron bed rail, her thin and toned body balanced perfectly.

“Your coverings are crooked,” she whispered suddenly.

“What?” Mal asked bewildered. She never had made much sense to him.

Muscles tensed, released. She sprang from the bed. Not quite human-like. And then she was in front of him. There had been no sound to her landing, no sight to her movement. What was she? It was all he could think as the breath hitched in Mals’ lungs.

“Let me.” The voice she used was soft, smoky.

This girl, who herself said she was mad, along with her feng le brother, took the bowl of hot protein mush that was held in Mals’ hands and placed it on the cold, hard, ship floor. Next to his hard worn boots, her own bare feet and all the while, faint steam rose up off the unfrozen, reheated sludge. Mal couldn’t help but notice the graceful hands, slender artists’ fingers with perfect, long nails.

Could they be sharp? He asked himself. With her, anything could be a weapon.

Deftly, she unbuttoned his top two buttons, which had been mis-buttoned, as was often the case with her often distracted captain. She re-buttoned the blood red shirt. Properly. She looked up into his deep, dark eyes, and raised an eyebrow with a cocky smile.

“You don’t even know my name!” The play ground taunt of so long

This is kind weird... I think River is a little out of character. I just don't see her pulling a gun on her brother.

me like... a dark take on an interesting and controversial partnership. always thought Mal was the better choice for River and she would be the one to take the first step. I can totally see River pulling a gun on Simon...I mean hello BDM, she totally knocked Simon on his ass without hesitation. whether or not she'd pull the trigger remains to be scene. wasn't quite sure about the fangs though were they litteral or a figment of the Captain's imagination...either way it's all good. looking forward to more.

To the two anonymouses (not the nice one!), you guys lack imagination.

River is a very dynamic character, and her pulling a gun on simon wouldn't be bizarre at all considering that she is slightly whacky...

And to the person who said "this aint right." stop being a troll! Get a spine and some eloquence, and maybe decide what you don't like about it. Just because you're too busy (wanking off) doesn't mean you can just leave no feedback. Make up your mind...

I loved this, I ain't much of a Mal/River shiper, but I think that this is written quite well, almost enough to sway my thoughts. I loved when River was coming up with all the outcomes... but Inara hanging herself was a little scary. *is young*

Anywho... to summarize; two dumb people hiding behind the anonymous suck. angie b is cool, and I love this story!

i was actually just thinking about other pairings, like river/mal when i came accross this. i like it, definately can see the gun happening, wish we had seen a little more of mal's thoughts on it though. the probabilities idea was very nice. also brave what you did with inara, a very strong image, as hanging is not the way i see her going, if she were to commit suicide, but that made it all the more effective as an image or idea. now that is a picture i cant get out of my head.

I am impressed with the way this was done, my only criticism, and it is entirely personal preference, and not meant to be derogatory as i like this fic, is that i thinkwe could have seen some more of mals thoughts, and that what we did see was not quite the mal i think of. definately gonna be rereading this one, who knows my opinon may change.

Thank you all!
Yeah, I wanted to put more internal thoughts, but I found myself thinking, "This would be something happening in the heat of the moment, so there really wouldn't be a lot of time to think," otherwise Mal would be all "Wait! This is a minor! What's going on?" So that's why I cut so much of the thought process.
And I thought River would be SOOO likly to pull a gun, after all she did pull one on Mal (Twice!) and punch Simon when she thought he was gonna put her to sleep... the list goes on.
And to the person who commented on River havin fang, they were sort of real. I just gave her abnormaly pointed teeth, which my dear Mal would be intregued by!
So this is all from you dear author. I'm working on a new one as we speak! I'll try to get it up A.S.A.P
Love!

Loved your story. I love Mal and River together. I am tired of waiting on Inara, she always cuts the captain off before anything can be said/done. I like River and Mal, good choices and stories. Simon needs to wise up and let River go. What's good for the goose is good for the gander as the saying goes. Please write more.

Hey I like the whole River/Mal thing... just.. maybe not in that fashion.

River wouldn't pull a gun on Simon... maybe just... slap him around a bit but not a gun. She does seem a bit out of character though... but this story still makes me giggle a bit.. if ina dark and morose kinda way.

While Jayne/River pairings are very nice.. I kinda can see Mal/River more because... well it's hard to put in words. Mal *is* technically younger than Jayne, alot more quick witted to match River's intellect, and can be rather tender. River's straight thinking is locked in a cell that filters through some times but is trapped mostly. Same with Mal and his personal emotions and feelings. Shows that he cares but doesn't let anyone really in.

I'm no expert, but Mal seemed to be the one a little out of character to me. Then again...the whole Mal/River pairing thing is something of a guilty pleasure for me anyway. (as in...will never admit reading it...to anyone, but like it.) but this was an interesting take on how their relationship could go...
