In photoshop, I cut and pasted each of the cartoons into a blank document, so they were on different layers. Then, I created a new blank layer over one cartoon's layer, and put a transparent-to-white gradient from the middle of the forehead to the feet (on the blank layer). I command-clicked on the layer that the cartoon was on, then inverted the selection, and deleted that selection on the gradient layer. I repeated this for the other cartoons, then wrote the text and drop shadowed it. And that's basically it!
