Firefly, season 2, Episode 1: Grey

The following takes place two years after the events of Serenity. Yes, Wash isn't dead. I don't care what you say, Wash is awesome and he's staying, damnit!

Mal, Zoe, Wash, and River are inside the helm of Serenity. Wash is in the pilot’s seat with Mal and Zoe standing close behind. River is in the copilot seat.

Mal: Come on Wash, get us out of here!

Wash: There’s not a lot that I can do at this point!

Zoe: Sir, the Reavers are gaining on us!

All see a wormhole ahead.

Mal (In bewilderment): Is that—

Wash: Our way out!

Zoe: Sir, we have no idea where that could take us. We could end up anywhere.

Mal: It’s either that or Reavers! Wash, gun it! (Over loud speaker) We will be passing through a wormhole with an unknown point of exit momentarily. Everybody please hold on to something.

The entire ship is illuminated, and Serenity passes through what appears to be a tunnel of hallucinogenic colors. When the ship emerges, they are in space that is devoid of anything but stars. Jayne rushes into the wheelhouse, followed by Simon and Inara.

Jayne: What in the gorram hell was that?!

Wash: Some nice flying is what that was!

Zoe: I knew you could do it baby.

Simon (Looking out at the stars): Where are we?

River: Somewhere new.

Camera pans from cockpit to ship exterior dramatically. Cue theme song.

Mal: So Wash, where are we, exactly?

Wash (Glancing at radar): Beats me cap’n. But being that we just ran through a wormhole and all, I’d say we’re somewhere in the vicinity of this area. (gestures at a poster depicting a picture of the expanding universe on the wall)

Simon: So in other words, we’re humped?

Wash: Yeah, we’re pretty much humped.

Inara: Is there any way that we could go back through the wormhole?

Zoe: We would be back in Reaver territory.

Jayne: Then what do we do? (Panicked)

Mal: We keep flying till we hit something.

Inara: If we don’t run out of fuel first.

Very enjoyable, and I like the writing style. The casual script structure is helpful for keeping track of who is speaking and where everyone is in the scene.

Introducing a wormhole and a new character are fun ways to boot up a second season of Firefly, and I'm glad you kept Wash in the mix and didn't try to replace Shepherd. While I'm sad he's gone, Shepherd's death had meaning, while Wash's was just tragic and senseless violence.

I'm very curious where else you might take our BDH.

Thank you! I had originally written the piece without Wash, but the story just felt incomplete, so I added him in. And I completely agree with you in regards to Shepherd Book; although he was a much loved charecter, his death had a purpose.

"Grey" was entertaining and much fun. You captured some of the essence of the characters and I like some of your new direction: River growing more socially appropriate, Mal & Inara's relationship, an interesting "new guy" and saving Wash. The wormhole itself is not in the style of the FF I know, but I like the return to Earth... Seems that the events could have taken on one of the new planets (bio weapon from independence war?) if the wormhole bothers anyone, but wormholes are closer to possibility (and reality) than terraforming so I'm cool with it after all. hope you keep writing, about FF and other stories. Good story. Thanks.

For me, the addition of the wormhole was my way of truly justifying Grey's usefulness to the crew as a navigator. Although it doesn't quite fit within the classic style of Firefly, it was the only way that I could think of to integrate Earth into the story without FTL travel. I'm so glad that you enjoyed my story. If people keep receiving these episodes well, I'll do my best to keep writing them. I have also posted this story on fanfic.net with a slightly extended ending if anyone is interested.

My feelings on FireFly: I agree Wash should not be dead.....In my thinking if ever, Firefly should come back to TV, I think the movie could be mostly ignored, and the series , more or less just pick up from where it left off with the original actors, not a "Reboot". I fear a Reboot could never match the magic Firefly.
