"What's the plan?"

Simon took a moment to answer Wash, sure that his sister would interrupt if he spoke but when she remained silent he explained. "We activate the back up."

Wash raised his eyebrows. "We?"

"I mean I do."

When Simon made no attempt to go and do just that Wash glanced from brother to sister, a look of confusion clouding his usually sunny face. "Don't you have to go do that activation thing now?"

River nodded. "Not from here."

"Are you gonna tell me or is this twenty questions 'cause I have to say I was always good at those."

"Wash, what River means is we can't do anything hiding behind this rock."

"Oh, you mean the ship has to be in line of sight?"

River shook her head. "*Bu qu*. Captain Daddy wants Serenity to stay hidden, we'll take a shuttle."

Alarmed, Wash could see all manner of *goushi* coming his way if he let that happen, not to mention the fact that River and Simon Tam were two of the Alliance's most wanted fugitives. "Why don't I just edge far enough out from behind the rock to send the Cap'n a wave?"

"Won't work and he'll be mad as *diyu* at you."

Wash knew that but he was going for damage limitation. He wondered if he could somehow get Inara to talk some sense into the siblings but she had gone to her shuttle to meditate and Kaylee was busy tinkering with the engine. Come to think of it,

Hmm. I sense a twist, particularly in regards to why Caleb also has a sword. I'm thinking Caleb isn't saying everything about his association with the underground, and it makes me wonder why some of his contacts are/were core born.

Now this was good. I am glad to see Operative Brooks ended--he was evil and cruel. My favorite part was the scene between Mal and Caleb. Mal is very perceptive, and I liked how you showed this, keeping all in character, too. "Keep your gorram sword sharp."--perfect. I also liked the scene where you showed Mal and Zoe's frustration as the train separated them from Brooks and Book, and they found themselves on the wrong side of the tracks. Symbolic, perhaps? I like how Mal wants not only nothing to do with the sword, but wants to see it melted down, unmade. A bit Lord of the Rings, there? Mal wants to send the sword to the Special Hell. Fitting. I'm hoping we'll find out more about Caleb soon--the hints you're dropping are tantalizing.

Very cool, though I am curious whats going to happen next. I mean way to many lose ends are running around still. Plus I think it is time River decided to pay Blue Sun back a little for messing with her new family.

You won't get all of Caleb's back story, Bytemite, but you are right that there is a lot more to him. I like showing Mal's sharper instincts from time to time and the fact that he really is smarter than he lets on, ebfiddler. He is not the only one to do that on Serenity. You are pretty perceptive your own self which is nice to see and yes, couldn't resist a little nod to Tolkein. There is a reason for everything Nutluck and though many threads will be resolved some will dangle just out of reach - one or two maybehaps cropping up in later stories. Thanks for all the shiny feedback, Ali D :~)

what the hell, Caleb...um, Caleb? former ninja, operative trained, underground special ops, Navy SEAL??? very good chapter, loved Mal running over the track without looking and they always do seem to underestimate him, don't they??

Glad you liked, MalsDoxy. Yes, they do keep underestimating our Captain. As for Caleb, he is another character who is more than he seems. Thanks for the feedback, Ali D :~)
