Chapter 17

“You really need all this fabric?” Jayne grumbled as they left their room.

“Thought we could sell it at the market near the spaceport.” Maggie answered, taking her bags from him “Help pay for the fare.”

As they walked towards the spaceport Maggie spied the type of shop she was looking for “Wait here.” She grabbed a couple lengths of fabric “I’ll be right back.” She headed into the shop and in no time she and the shop keeper have come back out. He was fawning over the fabric and Maggie was able to make a good profit. The whole time Jayne was looking around, he knows Mal will come looking for them, he just hoped they could get off the planet before they got spotted.

They got their coin from the shop keeper and headed to the spaceport, Jayne was looking for Serenity, thinking he saw her, he veered Maggie to the other end of the port.

“Jayne! Jayne Cobb that you?” a large hairy man came up to Jayne and grabbed him in a bear hug “Thought I was going to miss you guys this trip. Where’s Mal and Zoë? And who is this pretty little thing?”

Jayne wasn’t sure if he was happy or not to see Monty, he was Zoë and Mal’s old war buddy “I’m no longer on Serenity.” Jayne said slowly “Got my self married and Mal wasn’t to happy, so he kicked me off. This here is Maggie.” He shifted the bags so he could take her hand “You headed near Diablo, I’m looking to take Maggie home to my Ma.”

Monty looked at Jayne “Sure are, you come help load and I’ll give you passage. We’re leaving right now and I lost some men in a bar fight last night.” Monty stormed off towards his ship, grabbing Maggie’s bags on the way. “Knew Mal didn’t like coupling on his ship, surprise he would through you off thou.”

Maggie was running to keep up with the men.

“Well, he had told me she was off limits and we had a disagreement about it being an order and all.” Jayne hoped they can get off planet before they run into anyone. He knows Mal can’t force him to give Maggie up, but he’s afraid of what he’d tell her.

They took their bags t
