Chapter 12

Jayne didn’t run into anyone in the ship, but made sure Wash and Zoë saw him head off to town. He drove for 10 minutes or so then stopped to light a cigar and kill some time, he figured 10 more minutes and then he could circle around and approach the barn from the other side. He thought about Maggie and wondered how long they could keep this a secret. He smiled at the thought of Maggie, she was something else. Married life might be OK, she’ll have her own rooms and he can just come visit when ever he wants. He couldn’t see any real draw backs yet. He knew mercenaries were not suppose to have families or anyone they cared about, but that rule had already been shot to hell by Kaylee and watching Zoë showed him you can still kick ass even if you do care about people. He tossed his cigar butt into the dirt and headed back to the ranch.

Maggie stopped at the fire to say good night to Zoë and Wash, they were huddled in a blanket watching the fire die, then headed into the house to gather some blankets of her own. With the house as cover she headed to the barn, putting the bottle of whiskey on a trunk she headed to the row of unused stalls in the back. She forked in a layer of hay and laid the blanket out on top, tossed some pillows on top of that and went to put on the nightgown her mother had made for her all those years ago. Maggie wasn’t sure why she was so nervous, it’s not like this was their first time. Checking the barn door one last time, she sat on the ‘bed’ and brushed out her hair, after awhile she laid down and fell asleep.

Jayne opened the barn door and pushed the mule in, closing the doors behind him he called out in a loud whisper for Maggie. Getting no response he headed towards a dim light at the other end. Coming to the last stall he saw her, his heart almost stopped, she was asleep on top the blankets facing him in a lacey white nightgown.
