"Beginnings are such delicate things, child. Hold them gently."

The final words from Inara's first House Mother before...not that it mattered. Much. That had been a lifetime ago.

Not unlike what she once told a scared young girl trying to bring a new life into the world. it was just a moment in time that would pass.

And so it had. As all important moments do.

Even the moment her heart broke, realizing that a whore was better than a Companion in Mal's eyes. It had just been a moment in time. She'd let it pass, as so many others between them had done.

But this moment she did not want to have just pass her by.

He'd asked her why she'd not left again. Why she had decided to stay

And in that instant she knew.

Whispered, so he had to lean in to hear. "Because it is a beginning, Mal. A delicate thing."

This was fabulous, felt like a really true voice for Inara and I could see it happening just like that. Whereas the meeting with Inara and Mal on the catwalk and having sex just seemed a fantasy and not at all realistic. Bravo for achieving so much in such a short piece. Ali D :~)

How can I possibly get the literary reference after I'm still reeling from the hot catwalk sex fic? You expect me to actually think? BTW, I like this one, too.

Seneca said it first. Or at least he gets credit.
Semisonic *closing time* is more contemporary.
Which did you mean?

This is a nice characterization of the two of them.

Ooh, very shiny!! How in the verse are you able to put that much into so short a space? You make us hang on to every word while still making every word meaningful. Very well done!

Your imagery and your hints of past, present and future were perfect. Just enough detail to get your message across, and leave your reader curious for more. And there is more, right?
