Her words drip with quiet, deadly calm.

"That's the last time you ever get to call me a whore."

I get lonely. Sometimes I just need someone to touch me, and damn you for never trying.

He screams at her in anger.

"I should have kept you off my boat!"

Leave while you still can. Before I break you like I've broken everyone else.

Quiet pants and sighs. She whispers in his ear.

"Mal."

It's only ever been you. Stay like this forever, with me. Never make me leave again. Never stop.

His lips graze her neck.

"Inara."

You're not what they make you. Just stay here, on Serenity, with me. Be real with me.

Absolutely beautiful piece of writing, DearBuddha. In four snippets you've covered the highs and lows of their history, from past to possible future... and you've perfectly nailed their penchant for saying so much more than what the words alone convey.
