This is a rectangular version of the shoulder patch seen at the Battle of Serenity Valley in the pilot.
It might be unit insignia, but who knows? All we know for sure is that it's an Independent symbol of some kind, so I'm running with it.

That's pretty cool. The yellow and the green are reminiscent of the colors adopted by many African countries following their independence. I like the whole upside down star part.
